By the 12th century the Balt peoples were split into tribal groups, all practising nature religions. The two main groups in Lithuania were the Samogitians in the west and the Aukstaitiai in the east. In what is now south-west Lithuania and in neighbouring parts of Poland were the Yotvingians, also a Balt people, later to be assimilated by the Lithuanians and Poles. Poland-Lithuania began to cast interested eyes over Livonia (Latvia) and Estonia, as did Sweden and Russia's Ivan the Terrible. Ivan invaded first in 1558, initiating the 25-year Livonian War. It took Poland-Lithuania and then Sweden many years to expel Ivan and his Russian compatriots. After they managed this in 1592, Catholic Poland-Lithuania and Protestant Sweden settled down to fight each other in the Baltics. The Swedes won, securing Estonia and most of modern Latvia. Meanwhile, conflict continued between Poland-Lithuania and Russia, with the Russians eventually invading the Rzeczpospolita and annexing significant territory. A Prussian revival in the 17th century further weakened the Rzeczpospolita, which was eventually carved up by Russia, Austria and Prussia, with most of Lithuania going to the Russians. Lithuania was involved in two Polish rebellions against Russian rule in the 19th century, and its peasants weren't freed until 1861. The Russians persecuted Catholics and, from 1864, books could only be published in Lithuanian provided they used the Russian alphabet, and publications in Polish were banned altogether.

They remained separate states until 1569, when the formed the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. Together with much of Poland, Lithuania fell under Czarist Russian rule in the late 18 th century. The late 19 th century saw the rise of a national revival movement. It focused on the history of the Lithuanian state and Lithuanian language and culture, and began formulating demands for cultural and political rights. World War I gave the Lithuanians an opportunity to regain their independence, which they held from 1918 until 1940. On the National Day of Mourning (June 1) in 1989, at Naujoji Vilnia train station, people remember the mass deportations of Lithuanians to Siberia on June 14

It started again as Lithuanian Scouting in 1918. Scouting prospered until 1940, when occupation forces banned Scouting. In November of 1989, after the fall of communism, Scouting re-emerged in the democratic Lithuania. Lithuania was readmitted into WOSM in 1997. The Scout movement in Lithuania began in 1918, when the first Scout troop was founded in Vilnius by Scouter Kostas Jurgela. In 1922, the first Scout General Assembly united the Lithuanian Scout Movement into the Scout Association of Lithuania. In 1924, the Scout Association of Lithuania was registered as a member of the World Bureau. In 1940, the Soviet occupation of Lithuania resulted in Scouting being banned. In the years to 1945, an exile Scouting movement started in the camps for displaced persons. Many of these people moved t the USA and Australia. The organization was able to continue its work abroad. On April 29, 1989, on the eve of Lithuanian independence, the Scout Movement in Lithuania was re-established and Scouting activity restarted. Regular contacts were established and maintained with WOSM.

It was successful in fending off invading knights and maintaining the country's sovereignty and religion. In the 1300s, Lithuania's empire stretched to Belarus and the Ukraine. When prince of Lithuania married a Polish princess in 1386, the Lithuanian was made King of Poland on the condition that his country accept Christianity. By the end of the 18th century, Lithuania had been subsumed into Russia. Lithuanians supported the anti-Russian rebellions that arose in 1830 and 1863. The Russians responded by trying to erase the Lithuanian national identity but the people resisted and preserved a strong (if somewhat hidden) identity based on ethnicity, religion, and language. At the dawn of the second World War, the Soviets invaded Lithuania and shortly thereafter a Soviet Socialist Republic was declared. Though thousands fled (or were taken), the Lithuanians managed to thwart some of Russia's aims by preventing 'Russianization' of the region by keeping up the birth rate. As communism began to falter in the Soviet Union, Lithuania made its move, declaring its independence in 1990. The Russians resisted this action first through an economic blockage and later, by sending in troops and tanks. In September 1991, the USSR conceded and recognized Lithuania as an independent country (although its last troops in Lithuania did not leave until 1993).

Between 3 000-2 000 BC the cord-ware culture people spread over a vast region of Eastern Europe between the Baltic Sea and the Vistula River in the west and the Moscow-Kursk line in the east. Merging with the indigenous population they gave rise to the Balts a distinct Indo-European ethnic group whose descendants are the present-day Lithuanian and Latvian nations and the now extinct Prussians. The first written mention of Lithuania occurs in 1009 AD although many centuries earlier the Roman historian Tacitus referred to the Lithuanians as excellent farmers. Spurred by the expansion into the Baltic lands of the Germanic monastic military orders (the Order of the Knights of the Sword and the Teutonic Order) Duke Mindaugas united the lands inhabited by the Lithuanians the Samogitians Yotvingians and Couranians into the Grand Duchy of Lithuania (GDL) in the 1230s and 40s. In 1251 Mindaugas adopted Catholicism and was crowned King of Lithuania on July 6 1253; a decade later civil war erupted upon his assassination until a ruler named Vitenis defeated the Teutonic Knights and restored order. Lithuania's independence under the union with Poland was restored by Grand Duke Vytautas. During his rule (1392-1430) the GDL turned into one of the largest states in Europe encompassing present-day Belarus most of Ukraine and the Smolensk region of western Russia. Led by Jogaila and Vytautas the united Polish-Lithuanian army defeated the Teutonic Order in the Battle of Tannenberg (Gruenwald or Zalgiras) in 1410 terminating the medieval Germanic drive eastward.
