Over the past 20 years, the role of fathers in caring for children has received increased attention in the research literature. The confluence of several factorse.g., growth in the number of two-earner families, the women's movement, and the availability of affordable and quality childcarehave resulted in shifts in the expectations of fathers and questions about the nature of fatherhood and fathering, particularly the development of attachment and provision of nurturance (Benokraitis, 1985; Lamb, 1995). Much of the literature on fathers' caring continues to be shaped by developmental psychology, sociology, and family and gender studies. It explores father participation without much attention to the process(es) through which men come to participate in their children's lives and the nature of this participation (Barnett and Baruch 1987; Palkovitz, 1984). While mothers still provide more childcare than fathers (Blair and Lichter, 1991), fathers' participation in childcare activities has increased significantly within recent years (Coltrane, 1996; Douthitt, 1988; Glennon, 1995; Levine and Pitt, 1996; Pleck, 1987). However, because father involvement in childcare is not a traditional arrangement, families in which fathers are responsible for a substantial amount of childcare may be considered "nontraditional" or "alternative." These families are typically middle-class, well-educated, and White (Pruiett, 1987).

From the feedback, it is clear that some read the piece as though it was about literature reviews. It is not. The title indicates that it is about using the literature, which is quite different. My first subtext is that one cannot sensibly say what a literature review is, what it is for, where to put it, or whether to have one at all, until one has thoroughly explored why, in research, we might even want to refer to what others have said and done. There is a second subtext which, I hope, is more visible, and that is about the issue of authority in research. What counts as authority? Where can it be found? Why do we need it? Do we need it? Here, then, is a collection of analogies to describe some of the ways I have seen literature being used in research. Inevitably, some of these overlap, but I see no particular virtue in the categories remaining mutually exclusive. Many aspects of research methodology intersect with each other, and this area is no different from any other in this respect.

The action of the novel, and happily there is some action, occurs over the course of two days in 1905, when Russia, having lost the War with Japan, was wracked by strikes, conspiracy, violence and near revolution. Apollon Apollonovich Ableukhov is an elderly, but still devoted, Tsarist bureaucrat. His dilettantish son, Nikolai, who is dabbling in radical politics, has been given the task of murdering his own father; the chosen weapon, improbably enough, a bomb in a sardine tin. Just as the city of St. PetersburgPeter the Great's "window on the West"represents the point where the rational West meets the savage and mystical Orient, so this confrontation between father and son represents impending conflict between European reason and Asiatic barbarism, and the bomb itself represents the indiscriminately destructive forces about to be brought to bear on the decaying Tsarist state.

    Extractions: Literature Reviews summarize and evaluate research sources from a body of literature according to the purpose, or agenda, recognized in the thesis. They provide background for the discussion that follows, and a springboard for new ideas. The goal of writing them is to inform others about what certain articles or books say, and and to tell how valuable they are to the writer's purpose, or agenda. For instance, a chemist researching causes of human fetal death during pregnancy might choose to investigate various pathological phenomena associated with riboflavin deficiency in the mother. The researcher would search the literature, select articles relevant to his or her topic, group them together, and then compare, contrast, and finally synthesize them into a useful understanding. This understanding would provide a baseline knowledge on which an experiment could be formulated and carried out. In written form, the literature review provides a background to the report of the experiment. In another instance, a nurse needing to give an inservice about universal precautions to a group of brand new nursing students on their first clinical rounds would search the literature for articles and books on the topic. Then the nurse would select those that are most relevant to the point he or she wants to make in the inservice, group them together, compare, and contrast what they say, and finally synthesize them into a useful discussion. If the literature covers reasons why universal precautions are needed, the nurse can use the review as a springboard for a talk about how to implement them.
