Extractions: FAI is an automated installation tool to install Debian GNU/Linux on a Linux Cluster or a bunch of different hosts. It's similar but better than other tools like kickstart for Red Hat, yast and alice for SuSE, lui from IBM or Jumpstart for SUN Solaris. You can take one or more virgin PCs, turn on the power and after a few minutes Linux is installed, configured and running on the whole cluster, without any interaction necessary. Thus it's a scalable method for installing and updating a Beowulf cluster or a network of workstations unattended with little effort involved. FAI uses the Debian distribution and a collection of shell- and Perl-scripts for the installation process. Changes to the configuration files of the operating system are made by cfengine, shell and Perl scripts. Using FAI, unattended and fully automated OS installations of several Linux clusters were performed. FAI's target group are system administrators who have to install Debian onto one or even hundreds of computers. It's not only a tool for doing a Cluster installation but a general purpose installation tool. It can be used for installing a Beowulf cluster, a rendering farm, a web server farm, or a linux laboratory or a classroom. Even installing a HPC cluster or a GRID and fabric management can be realized by FAI. Large-scale linux networks with different hardware and different installation requirements are easy to establish using FAI and its class concept. Remote OS installations, Linux rollout and mass installation are other topics for FAI.

Encore Web Forum II Written in the Perl language with a ASCII text file database structure that will run on almost any web server and operating system, including Windows, Unix, linux and Solaris. http://www.aborior.com/encore/index.shtml
Extractions: - Jim Encore Web Forum Encore Web Forum II is an elegant forum system for the World Wide Web. It creates a venue for discussion and interaction between visitors of a website. But more than a forum, it is a vibrant online community builder and communication tool, offering such features as user polls, chat rooms, private messaging, an e-mail mailing list, e-mail notification, post pre-moderation, message reports, file attachments, IP banning, themes and a myriad of others. Encore Web Forum is an application created using Aborior's Simplex Database software, allowing it to use an efficient database such as MySQL or Microsoft SQL Server as a solid foundation stone. Alternatively, it can also make use of Simplex's own binary file database to run on just about any server configuration. The design tools and versatile templates of Simplex Database give Encore II the supreme edge in customisation, with every aspect open to modification, from the database table structure, to queries and access controls, and on to HTML layouts and forms. The emphasis throughout the design of Encore Web Forum II has been on customisation, ease of use, performance, features and flexibility, while maintaining a friendly level of simplicity. The software can be enjoyed on many levels, from both an administrator's and user's perspective. It can also be installed very easily using a fully automated setup program which can configure, upload and set permissions on files for you.
The Penguin, The Press, And The Marketplace The viability of linux as a mainstream operating system, examined from a media and marketing perspective. http://www.hastingsresearch.com/linux/penguin.shtml
Extractions: Annotated: 1/11/2001 Many Linux enthusiasts believe that Linux has grown through technological superiority, and the superior morality of open source software. Unquestionably that's part of it. Yet it is not the end of the story. There are a thousand ways a new idea can fail, few to succeed. The path to market can be narrow and winding. It can also be surprising. More than one Linux user has pulled their head out of an Alpha one fine morning, picked up the local newspaper, and found the penguin sitting smack dab at the top of the Technology section. Why now, they wonder; we've been around awhile. It's a question worth asking, since opportunity doesn't hang around forever. (I use "Linux" in the popular sense, to describe the kernel, libraries, and GUIs packaged in distributions.)

Extractions: Whatever happened to Linux on the desktop? Once upon a time the open, free operating system held a philosophical magnetism that promised to bring down Microsoft. But its reliability and low cost count for nothing at the PC coalface, where Windows rules. It's different in corporate-land. Linux has had a dream run, its acceptance accelerated with support from heavyweights such as IBM and Hewlett-Packard. These companies want Linux to power their back-end servers, but when it comes to the PC, familiarity is more important than cost, and few are familiar with Linux. That's not for lack of trying. Linux has been working hard to put on a prettier face for the end user. It has evolved rapidly from the first-generation graphical user interface of several years ago into a capable, easy-to-use, intuitive desktop that can work as well as anything Windows can do.
