Most of the works published in violation of the rights of the Estate (in my lay opinion as a non-lawyer) are either so unreliable or otherwise lacking in utility as to warrant no mention here, or are simply verbatim copies of information from Tolkien's published works (and so still widely available in legal publication). Those who wish to see such works, despite the rights of the Tolkien Estate to say nothing of respect for the views and wishes of the author whose works have inspired us to this study should have no trouble finding such with the aid of a Web search engine. Extractions: Distinguished Research Professor Emeritus Professor Brown has research and teaching interests in linguistic anthropology, including ethnobiology, language and culture, and historical-comparative linguistics. His recent research has focused on lexical acculturation, language universals, and the comparative study of Mayan languages. He has undertaken fieldwork among Huastec (Mayan) speakers of northern Veracruz, Mexico, and among Zapotec speakers in the Mexican state of Oaxaca. Fall semester 2001, he was a visiting scientist in the linguistics department at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig, Germany. Extractions: The quantitative approach to language opens up important and exciting theoretical perspectives, as well as solutions for a wide range of practical problems, by introducing into linguistics the methods and models of advanced scientific disciplines such as the natural sciences, economics, and psychology. Quantitative mathematical methods (probability theory, stochastic processes, differential and difference equations, fuzzy logic and set theory, function theory etc.) are being applied to all aspects of language and text phenomena, including the areas of psycholinguistics, sociolinguistics, dialectology, pragmatics, etc., and on all levels of linguistic analysis. In applied linguistic disciplines, the quantitative approach is constantly gaining interest, e.g. in the fields of natural language processing, machine translation, language teaching, documentation and information retrieval. In view of the growing number of scientists involved in, and the increase of research on, theoretical and applied aspects of QL, an international forum for information and co-operation in this field seemed highly desirable. Therefore, on the occasion of the Second International Conference on Quantitative Linguistics, QUALICO-2, which was held in Moscow, Russia, at Moscow State University, in September 1994, the International Quantitative Linguistics Association (IQLA) was founded.
