Point Piños Lighthouse was higher than the salary of East coast keepers Most men on the west were seeking their fortune in inlaw, Inspector Henry Nichols of the us Lighthouse Service http://www.rudyalicelighthouse.net/CalLts/PtPinos/PtPinos.htm
Extractions: Point Piños was the third lighthouse established on the West Coast (after Alcatraz and Fort Point) and is the oldest continuously operating lighthouse on the West Coast. The California cottage (sometimes erroneously referred to as "Cape Cod style" - see Shanks p. 29) design is standard to many of the original west-coast lighthouses - a keeper's house with a lantern room on the roof. A local customs collector wrote "his widow, Charlotte A. Layton and her four children have been left entirely destitute. I authorized her to continue at the post occupied by her late husband...she is industrious and bears an unblemished reputation." (Clifford, "Women who Kept the Lights", p. 43) Charlotte lit the lamp in January 1855. She was paid $1000 per year, which was higher than the salary of East Coast keepers. Most men on the west were seeking their fortune in the gold fields, so keepers were difficult to come by and retain. She remained as keeper until she married George Harris in 1860. Harris assumed the duties of the keeper shortly thereafter. (Nelson, p. 52) Robert Lewis Stevenson visited the lighthouse in 1879. He was a resident of nearby Monterey at the time. He would later write of keeper Allen Luce in an article "The Old and New Pacific Capitols."

Howard Rumsey: The Hard Bop Homepage TED GIOIA, west coast Jazz. the current group appearing now with me at the Lighthouse in Hermosa Bob Cooper is the veteran, having been with us about four years http://members.tripod.com/~hardbop/rumsey.html
Extractions: November 7, 1917 The Lighthouse All-Stars "The All-Stars had always been somewhat unaffected by the cool jazz ethos prevalent on the coast. This was hard bop plain and simple . . ." Ted Gioia Starting as a pianist, then switching to drums, Howard Rumsey focused on the bass after a musician friend told hi there was a shortage of solid players on that instrument. After completing a year at Los Angeles City College, Rumsey landed a choice job with Vido Musso's band, soon following it with a lengthy stint with Johnny "Scat" Davis. When former Musso sideman Stan Kenton decided to form his own band, Rumsey immediately signed on as bassist. The Kenton ensemble proved to be a huge success, quickly parlaying its local following of college and high school students into a dedicated radio audience from coast to coast. He incurred a rapid departure from the ensemble when he was literally heaved off the bandstand by Kenton after an onstage disagreement. Upon leaving Kenton, Rumsey worked for several first-class bandleaders, including Charlie Barnet and Barney Bigard. TED GIOIA
Kite Aerial Photography - Pt. Bonita Lighthouse The Pigeon Point Lighthouse site provides some information on Pt. Bonita. For instance, it relates that the first fog signal used on the us west coast was at http://arch.ced.berkeley.edu/kap/gallery/gal103.html
Extractions: Marin Headands, California The Pt. Bonita Lighthouse is situated at the end of an adventuresome path invloving tunnels and bridges (39K jpg, Canon 24-mm, August 1997). I've had my eye on this lighthouse for some time and have hiked out to its barren point on many occasions. It is a short, but interesting, walk through hand carved tunnels and across suspension bridges. The way takes you past the ruins of a life boat station. Finally you arrive at the very tip of land enclosing the northern side of the Golden Gate Straight. For two years I've approached different folks at the National Park Service people about arranging permission to photograph Pt. Bonita and Alcatraz Island. They are a hard bunch to pin down. On this particular day I just walked out to the lighthouse on a scouting mission. The wind and light looked mighty nice so I worked on convencing the docent that my kite flying would be innocent and unobtrusive. The docent said well maybe, ok, sort of, let's see and I sent the kite up for a trial run. I was able to take a couple of test rolls before I pulled it down. So these August images are test shots. After forwarding copies to the NPS I still haven't secured permission for additional shots. The Pigeon Point Lighthouse site provides some information on Pt. Bonita. For instance, it relates that the "first fog signal used on the U.S. West Coast was at Point Bonita: an Army-surplus, eight-foot long, 24-pounder siege gun from the Benicia Arsenal. The 'fog signal' was operated by a new keeper, one Sgt. Maloney, U.S. Army Ret., who fired the gun every half-hour during foggy weather starting August 8, 1856." Now that would be interesting duty.

Extractions: This past weekend, my wife Kathleen and I traveled to Crescent City and Harbor, Ore., where we found a beautiful lighthouse that overlooks the harbor at Harbor. I would like to hear from any readers who know the history of the lighthouse. It appears to have been an official lighthouse at one time and the Coast Guard is located at Harbor as well. The lighthouse is located on a bluff above the Port of Brookings-Harbor on the Oregon Coast with a view of the Pacific Ocean. It is the newest lighthouse on the on the West Coast and possibly the newest in the United States. It is the second private residence on the Oregon Coast to be designated a private aid to navigation. It is owned by Bill and Jo Ann Cady.

Cape Blanco Lighthouse History most tectonically active places along the west coast of North for coastal defense and housed us Army personnel also used the Cape Blanco Lighthouse as a http://www.or.blm.gov/salem/html/archaeology/historic-sites/capeblanco.htm
Extractions: History of the Cape Blanco Lighthouse The Suc-qua-cha-ta-ny (or "Sixes" Indian) name for the promontory where the lighthouse stands is Pen-yek-kwet , meaning finger-nail-upon. This is a very descriptive name, as the cape appears to be the finger nail upon the landscape; a long, thin promontory sticking out from the rest of the coastline. The area was named "Cape Blanco" (meaning "White Cape") in 1603 by Spanish explorers who sailed along the coast but didnt make landfall. It wasnt until the 1850s that Euro-Americans first explored the headland. In 1852, placer gold was discovered at Whisky Run beach (about 5 miles north of Bandon), and a year later other deposits were found along the lower Coquille River. These strikes brought many men into the area; settlements were begun and the first lumbering started. After the gold strikes the town of Port Orford became a hub of economic activity. The increased ship traffic resulted in many wrecks on rocks around Cape Blanco, which provided the impetus for construction of the lighthouse. Cape Blanco was purchased by the US Lighthouse Board in 1867. Col. Robert Stockton Williamson was put in charge of lighthouse construction, which began in June, 1870. By October, the structure was completed.
