Extractions: home lighthouses links shop contact about About The Lighthouse Company Welcome to the first and hopefully the most comprehensive page on lighthouses in South Africa. I have recently become addicted to these lights of the night and foggy days. It all started when a friend of mine took me to a Maritime Antique shop at the Cape Town Waterfront to introduce me to the manager who asked if I could make miniatures of lighthouses and that was about 2 years ago. This has been a real adventure for me and has opened new horizons as the research took me to book publishers, the Internet, where I found one site on Agulhas and of course the lighthouses of the world. Once I had been on a couple of trips and met a few keepers I was hooked, so here I am. I will endeavour to bring as much as I can to lighthouse fanatics. South Africa has 43 lighthouses in all. I have broken them up into regions starting at the West coast at Paternoster where the Cape Columbine lighthouse is situated, moving to Cape Town where there are a multitude of incredible buildings. Moving along the South coast to Port Elizabeth and East London and finally up East coast to Durban and up to the Mozambique border to the lighthouse at Cape Vidal. The Lighthouse Company invites those "mad about lighthouse" people to join our company to an adventure of lighthouses in South Africa.

Extractions: PREPARATION The spare bedroom in my home had been the repository for every possible item of hiking and camping gear since mid-April 1996. Repository for gear I had originally planned to leave in the month of May for a trip through Utah and the Grand Canyon in Arizona, but was delayed due to a trial which went over through the month of May. As a result, summer holiday plans had to be changed and the month of July was set aside. My good friend, Larry Calloway from Santa Fe, New Mexico, agreed to hike in the San Juan Mountains in Colorado at the end of July. In June the idea of hiking the West Coast Trail in early July began to take shape. I had tried earlier to get reservations for this hike, but I was not aware that reservations had to be made in early March. Two days after the trail reservation office was open, the trail was fully booked for the summer of 1996. My only other option was to go to Port Renfrew or Bamfield and hope that I could get on the trail as a walk-on. This may mean some delay in beginning the hike while I waited around to get on the trail. My brother, Tom came to Edmonton for a visit in early June and we discussed the possibility of this hike. I followed up with frantic calls during the month trying to set a time for the hike. Tom's calendar for July was already booked with a canoe trip for the students at his College in mid-July and he usually planned a canoe holiday with his girls, Christy and Jodi at the beginning of July. He was very reluctant to miss his holidays with his girls. But Jodi had a soccer tournament in early July. Terry Hannan encouraged Tom to go on the hike with me. Finally, a week before the trip was to begin, Tom acknowledged that he would come to the west coast to hike with me in early July.

Extractions: In 1539, Hernando Desoto landed at Shaw's Point in Bradenton. Desoto is said to have enslaved the Indians and demanded that they lead him to El Dorado, the City of gold. After guiding his men through a 4,000 mile search, Desoto grew weary and ill and died. After Desoto died his men abandoned the quest and returned to Mexico. There is no trace of the Timucuan in modern times. A variety of reasons, including disease, wiped out the tribe. George Emerson Bean was the first permanent resident in 1892. Development on the Island began during the early 1900's by Bean and the Anna Maria Beach Company. The first church, Roser Memorial Community Church, was also built at this time. The Anna Maria City Pier is located on Tampa Bay at the end of Pine Avenue. The Pier and wharf were built by the Anna Maria Development Company in 1911-1912 before any bridges connected the Island to the mainland, so that the ships from Tampa and St. Petersburg would have a place to dock. The pier served as the port of call for ships carrying visitors and supplies The 678 foot long pier has withstood many hurricanes and storms. Parts of the pier were damaged and restored in 1918, 1935, 1974 and 1988. Although the pier has been remodeled over the years, it still remains similar to its original appearance in 1910. Tropical storm "Keith", November 1988, severely damaged the restaurant portion. This damage was removed and part of the pier was rebuilt. The wharf extends another 58 feet into Tampa Bay
