Extractions: Above photo courtesy U.S. Coast Guard. Onshore Lighthouse Construction TypesReinforced Concrete (1908-1948) Examples: Point Arenas, Cape Decision, Cleveland Ledge, Oak Island Concrete towers reinforced with steel began to replace brick masonry towers at the beginning of the 20th century; the first was constructed in 1908 at Point Arena, California. Steel in concrete structures provided the tensile properties that concrete alone lacks. A series of art-modern reinforced concrete lighthouses were built along the Alaska coast in the 1920s and 1930s, replacing earlier deteriorated wooden structures. The introduction of reinforced concert once again changed the direction of lighthouse construction. This material was in many ways superior to iron and steel. It was cheaper and required much less maintenance. Also, it was extremely strong. Many lighthouses built in places susceptible to earthquakes were made of reinforced concrete. Therefore, most major concrete towers are found on the west coast. Reinforced concrete towers began to replace brick masonry towers at the beginning of the 20th century. The first reinforced concrete tower was built at Point Areas, California, in 1910. It is 115 feet tall, one of the two tallest towers on the West Coast. The tallest reinforced concrete tower is Navassa in the West Indies. This tower is 150 feet tall. A series of reinforced concrete towers of art deco design were constructed in Alaska during the 1920s and 1930s. One of these, Scotch Cap, was destroyed by a tidal wave in 1946; killing five men.

Can Kate keep the light? 3rd Grade Reading Level 3.1-3.5; Ages 8-9. The first permanent lighthouse in this country was built in Boston Harbor in 1716. A lighthouse tower still stands on the same spot. One of the first laws passed by the Congress of the United States in 1789 was for the establishment of what became the United States Lighthouse Service. Over the next two centuries lighthouses of every size and shape were built around our country. Today the U.S. Coast Guard cares for the lighthouses that are still in operation. Different Kinds of Lighthouses - Conical: In the early days, most lighthouses were built of stone or wood and were rounded towers. A few octagonal towers were also built. Sometimes these towers sat on only a few rocks surrounded by the sea. Keepers would live in tiny rooms within the tower itself. If there was more room, a keeper's house would be built immediately next to the tower.

After his passing in 1822, his widow Mehitable, sold the 3 1/4 acres of land to the Federal Government for $400. Commercial trade on Lake Ontario had been steadily growing, and they were to build a new lighthouse here as an Aid to Navigation for ships entering the Port of Rochester, NY. At the time of it's construction, this location was part of the village of Charlotte. Constructed of rubble stone on a natural, emplaced foundation, the octagonal tower reaches 40 feet in height. It's original lantern housed 10 argand lamps with reflectors fueled by whale oil. The lighthouse has a day-mark of natural with a black lantern.
Extractions: The southwest coast of Vancouver Island is a notorious stretch known for dramatic and often sudden winter storms. Navigating the coast is challenging at best. Despite the harshness, the coast has an alluring beauty that has captivated people through the centuries. Their experiences, like the lichen-covered fence posts, dangling bits of telegraph wire and rusting anchors infuse the landscape with legend and story. This book contains some of those fascinating stories.

Light vacation Many lighthouses along Oregon coast open for touring RON COWAN, GANNETT NEWS SERVICE The Pacific Ocean may look placid and benign to modern coast visitors, but navigators of the 19th century had reason to dread the waters off Oregon. More than a few ships were victims of the treacherous rocks and currents off the coast before the arrival of modern technology and technology's predecessor, the coastal lighthouses. Oregon has nine surviving lighthouses, established by the former U.S. Lighthouse Board between 1870 and 1896 with design and construction provided by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The sometimes imposing, often picturesque beacons were built on prominent headlands or near major estuaries. One, Tillamook Rock, was built on a basalt rock islet 1.2 miles offshore.
