Where can I purchase a lighthouse? The best sources of information to purchase a lighthouse are the regional offices of the General Services Administration (GSA). Links are provided below. Lighthouses can leave Federal government ownership in several ways. The GSA is the Federal governments real estate broker and normally processes most of the lighthouse sales. Generally a federal, state, or local government entity takes jurisdiction, or there is a legislative transfer to a non-profit historic preservation group.

Special Collection: Lighthouses Of The U.S. travel guides and a special section devoted to lighthouses of the great lakes. HistoricLight Stations A lighthouse listing by state from the us Coast Guard http://www.cantonpl.org/specialc/lighthse.html
Extractions: Lighthouses are romantic and mysterious, and have long been the stuff of legends. These are the stories of many magnificent and historic lighthouses of the United States, of their legends, their stories and their keepers. We also offer travel guides and a special section devoted to lighthouses of the Great Lakes. Books and websites that serve as guides to lighthouses often include brief histories as well as current travel information. General Lighthouse History and Guides: Books American Lighthouses: A Comprehensive Guide (1998) by Bruce Roberts and Ray Jones: This guide is organized by region, and then by state within the region. There are over 450 lighthouse entries, each of which includes a small photo and a brief history and description. The best part of the entry is the "travel information," which describes how to get to each lighthouse. Legendary Lighthouses (1998) by John Grant: As they note in the introduction of this book (a companion to the PBS Legendary television series), lighthouses "speak to people on many levels." They attempt to address some of those levels here by offering a blend of photographs, histories, and interesting stories. There is also a website (also called

Extractions: Great Lighthouses Split Rock, Lake Superior Marblehead, Lake Erie Grosse Point, Lake Michigan Fort Niagara ... Rock of Ages Split Rock Lighthouse ,Two Harbors, Minnesota, 1910 Lake Superior Perched on a 120-foot cliff over Lake Superior, Split Rock Lighthouse in Two Harbors, Minnesota has attracted tourists since its construction in 1910. It is one of the most visited and popular lighthouses in the country. The Split Rock Lighthouse is an octagonal yellow-brick structure, with a 54-foot tower. It also sits on the cliff, so it is one of tallest lighthouses in the Great Lakes area. The lighthouse also owes its existence to the terrible winter storms of 1905, when 116 lives were lost to three violent storms. One record gale on November 28, 1905, damaged nearly 30 ships on Lake Superior alone. Story of Construction: All the materials were shipped in and had to be lifted 120 feet to the top of the cliff, using a 12,000 pound steam hoist. Construction started May 1909, and went through November. Workers hiked through woods and took a logging train to Duluth. Work resumed the next spring, and the light station was completed and ready for occupancy by midsummer of 1910.
Legendary Lighthouses Great Stories-Western Great Lakes Lighthouse Keepers Quarters, dating to 1861, fully Museum portion of the us CoastGuard property recently transferred to great lakes Shipwreck Historical http://www.pbs.org/legendarylighthouses/html/glakegs.html
Extractions: Lighthouses of the Western Great Lakes Whitefish Point and the Sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald Apostle Islands New and Old Presque Isle Fort Gratiot ... Big Red/Holland Whitefish Point , Lake Superior, Michigan, 1849 and 1861 Edmund Fitzgerald went down. Known as the Graveyard of the Lakes because of dangerous shoals in the area. Seventy major shipwrecks have occurred near there since the beginning of regular navigation on Lake Superior, including the loss of the legendary Edmund Fitzgerald . This is ironic because the Bay itself is relatively calm. The tower is an interesting structure. It is a steel cylinder supported by skeletal steel "iron pile" framework. It looks modern but was built in 1861 to replace the original tower. Excellent restoration restored as Great Lakes Shipwreck Historical Museum Quarters housed two side-by-side residences: one has been restored to mid-1890s; other to 1920s 1920 U.S. Coast Guard Lookout Tower opening this summer
