Over $17,000 distributed from 2003 Festival Sharing Program The "Lighthouses of the Great Lakes" are a magnificent collection of history and should be restored, preserved and maintained for all generations to enjoy. Pictures alone can not do these superb structures justice. Over the years, technology has replaced manual tasks with automated systems. With modern navigational systems, such as the Loren-C and the G.P.S. (Global Positioning Systems), the need for lighthouses are now minimal. Ship masters, as well as recreational boaters, can now access these navigational systems to plot their course with the precision of NASA's space programs. The U.S. Coast Guard, Department of Transportation and/or the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) plans to excess, grant out, lease out and/or by a direct legislative transfer or lighthouses throughout the United States. Tomorrow, the number of buoy's, markers and lighthouses needed to safely travel our waterways will be "ZERO". Today, we have to save what lighthouses we can, for tomorrow may be too late for many!

Lighthouses Of The Interior U.S. This page is for lighthouses of the landlocked states in the interior of theUS, that is on either the Atlantic, the Pacific, or the great lakes. http://www.unc.edu/~rowlett/lighthouse/llus.htm
Extractions: This page is for lighthouses of the land-locked states in the interior of the U.S., that is, those states that have no coastline on either the Atlantic, the Pacific, or the Great Lakes. There are 19 states in this category. To be listed here, a lighthouse must actually serve as an aid to navigation. This means it must be located on a navigable lake or river and must be lit as a navigational aid at least during the local boating season. There are thousands of miles of navigable water in the interior states, much of it on the Mississippi, the Missouri, the Ohio, and the other great rivers of the country. The Coast Guard maintains aids to navigation on the major river systems, but as far as I know there are no officially sanctioned lighthouses anywhere on those waterways. All the lighthouses listed here are privately maintained and unofficial. Surely there are other lighthouses that should be listed here; please let me know about them!

Extractions: Contact: James Hyland 1-800-727-BEAM (Rockport, Mass.) - The first head of America's Bureau of Lighthouses, George R. Putnam, once said that, ". . . lighthouses appeal to the interest and better instinct of man because they are symbolic of never-ceasing watchfulness, of steadfast endurance in every exposure, of widespread helpfulness. The building and the keeping of the lights is a picturesque and humanitarian work of the nation." His sentiments surely echo those of countless sailors, who for centuries have relied on the guidance of lighthouses. In fact, lighthouses have proven to be such a popular icon with the American public in general that the U.S. Postal Service is once again singing their praises. In 1990, the U.S. Post Offices issued 5 lighthouse stamps to commemorate the bicentennial of America's lighthouses. They proved to be the best selling stamps of the year. Now, by popular denand in 1995, the Postal Service will issue a continuation of that series with 5 new commemorative stamps by the same artist, Howard Koslow, featuring an historic lighthouse from each of the 5 Great Lakes. The first day of issue is scheduled for June 17th in Cheboygan, Michigan aboard the Coast Guard icebreaker, Mackinaw, and will include representatives from the U.S. Postal Service, the Coast Guard, the Great Lakes Lighthouse Keepers Association, and the stamps' sponsoring organization, The Lighthouse Preservation Society.
