Extractions: National Monument Text from the Park Service Brochure : The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers began work on Fort Point in 1853. Plans specified that the lowest tier of artillery be as close as possible to the water level so cannonballs could ricochet across the water's surface to hit enemy ships at the waterline. Workers blasted the 90-foot cliff down to 15 feet above sea level. The structure featured 7-foot thick walls and multi-tiered casemated construction typical of Third System forts. It was suited to defend the maximum amount of harbor area. While there were more than 30 such forts on the East Coast, Fort Point was the only one built on the West Coast. In 1854, Inspector General Joseph F.K. Mansfield declared "this point as the key to the whole Pacific Coast...and it should receive untiring exertions." A crew of 200 labored for eight years on the fort. In 1861, with war looming, the Army mounted the fort's first cannon. Col. Albert Sidney Johnston, commander of the Department of the Pacific, prepared Bay Area defenses and ordered in the first troops to the fort. Kentucky born Johnston then resigned his commission to join the Confederate Army; he was killed at the Battle of Shiloh in 1862. Throughout the Civil War, artillerymen at Fort Point stood guard for an enemy that never came. The Confederate raider

Extractions: Welcome to Rockland, Maine - The true gateway to Penobscot Bay! Rockland has always benefited from a unique combination of geography and economics that has made it one of the most beautiful and practical destinations on the coast of Maine. Its nearly 8,000 residents live at the heart of Midcoast Maine, an area world famous for its mountainous and rocky shore with hundreds of harbors and inlets, and for some of the best cruising waters anywhere for sailing and boating for pleasure or sport. A nearly mile-long granite breakwater protects Rockland Harbor and lighthouse making it one of the finest shipping and recreational boating harbors on the East Coast of the United States. Shipbuilding, lime processing, granite quarrying, and commercial fishing and lobstering have all figured in Rocklands industrial past. Since the 1850s, the City has served as the commercial center of Knox County and is the County Seat. An historic Main Street forms the core of retail shopping, while large modern outlying shopping centers provide the diversity required by todays modern mobile customers. Both areas are active and diverse adding to the convenience of shopping in Rockland. The communitys proud past survives in many ways, including a newly restored and enlarged Carnegie library, traditional but modernized health care facilities, new and renovated schools and an incredible mix of traditional residential styles of architecture that rivals the historic homes of many larger cities.

The History Of The Coast Guard In Strathmere New Jersey The Corson's Inlet coast Guard Station. ( please click on images for larger views) Before 1915, the U.S. coast Guard was known as the U.S. Life Saving Service. built along the east and west coast http://www.strathmere.net/coastguard.html
Extractions: Before 1915, the U.S. Coast Guard was known as the U.S. Life Saving Service. It was established in 1871, and 280 stations were built along the east and west coast and the Great Lakes for search and water rescue. The Corson's Inlet Life Saving Station once stood on the beach at 58th street in Ocean City. In 1915 the U.S. Revenue Cutter Service and U.S. Life-Saving Service were combined and renamed the U.S. Coast Guard. They started moving oceanfront stations to the bayside in several areas. They did this so that they would be able to use the new bigger motorboats, which were better launched in deeper bay waters. In 1925, the base for Corson's Inlet Coast Guard was moved from Ocean City's 58th street beach to Strathmere's bay. Above on the left is an old image from the Coast Guard of Corson's Inlet Life Saving Station after it was built in 1872. The style of the building was known as 'Red House'. The second photo shows the 58th Street building after it was enlarged in 1899 to the 'Jersey Pattern' style of building. The station stood beachfront on 58th street on the Ocean City side of the inlet. In February of 1924, a storm caused massive damage to the bulkhead in front of the station. In May of that year the US Coast Guard sent a representative to hold a town meeting about closing the station. The local Ocean City residents and representatives greatly opposed the closing of the station and emphasized it's importance. But by July the government had announced that it would close the 58th street station and relocate it to the south side of Corson's Inlet, in Strathmere. They pointed out that moving to the bay would enable them to build a new launchway building equipped with the new high speed boats. The main body of the station was dismantled, moved, and rebuilt in Strathmere in 1924-25.

Item 5 of the list is quoted "You will not sell, or permit to be sold, any spiritous liquors on the premises of the United States; but will treat with civility and attention such strangers as may visit the light-house under your charge, and as may conduct themselves in and orderly manner." Wonder what brought that all about? Xerox copy available. DELAWARE BAY LIGHTHOUSE KEEPERS ASSN REPORT: The Association puts out a periodic newsletter entitled "The Bay Run" Their summer 1998 edition has a great deal of lighthouse information with emphasis on the caisson type lights of the Delaware Bay. There are quality copies of photographs of Elbow of Cross Ledge circa 1940s and one of the light after it had been struck on October 20, 1953 by an inbound U.S. Steel freighter. The ship rammed the light in dense fog. The entire upper portion of the caisson light was demolished An inset shows how the light appears today. Fortunately the light had been automated two years before the collision. Address of the Delaware Bay Lighthouse Keepers Assn. is: D.B.L.H.K. c/o Carole Reily, 279 Mayflower Drive, Buena, NJ 08310. We allocated three days to explore some parts of the east coast but soon discovered there was lots to see and we wished we had longer. On our first day we drove from Rotorua to Whanarua Bay where we found a remote and cosy hostel right on the beach. Due to a misunderstanding when we booked all the rooms were full so the owner, who was eager to help, kindly lent us a tent and matrice and let us stay for free. He also gave us a tasty, freshly caught crayfish for lunch. We spent the afternoon exploring the bay by climbing over rocks and finding our way through a cave to another cove. On our way back we had to cross a stream using a rope swing, Sheryl took about an hour deciding whether to swing or not before eventually giving up and wading through instead! We left early the next morning to make the long windy drive around the coast to Gisborne, stopping off to visit the East Cape, the most easterly point of mainland New Zealand. We made the short climb to the top of a hill to visit a lighthouse. In Gisborne we spent the night in a hostel which was a converted convent.

It's tiny but the home baked scones and cakes are simply amazing. I've never tasted a better bridie in my life. It wouldn't be the first time I'll go back to a place for the food! As most businesses in the area, the bakery is family-run " Ten months on and I still think about the bridie I had in Elie that day " Elie doesn't need a supermarket as there is one in Anstruther (6 3/4 miles along the Fife Tourist Route). They have everything they need: a post, a bank, a baker, a butcher and even a tourist information centre. However, it's the walk from Elie to St Monans that proved to be most interesting as you will see later on.
