Extractions: Block Island sits approximately 12 miles south-southeast off the coast of Rhode Island, squarely astride the coastal sealanes. The Block Island South East Lighthouse has stood atop Mohegan Bluff, high above the Atlantic Ocean, since 1874. The lighthouse and keepers quarters were meant to be showpieces for the U.S. Lighthouse Bureau. They were among the most elaborate built during the 1870s. South East light has been the focus of an intense preservation campaign. Local and national efforts forged a complex partnership to move the structure away from eroding bluffs and restore it to operation, with long-term preservation in mind. Following designs produced by the Light House Board in 1873, the residence and tower were built in 1874 by contractor T.H. Tynan of Staten Island, in the High Victorian Gothic style. The original lighthouse and attached keepers house structures retain a high level of integrity. To prevent it from slipping into the Atlantic as the bluff eroded away, the lighthouse was moved, during August 1993, approximately 250 feet back from the edge of Mohegan Bluffs. As the lighthouse remains within the historic boundaries of the station, the integrity of the light station's setting, feeling, and association has been maintained.

Wood & Stone Lighthouse Construction Type Given the flat nature of east coast geography, where If lighthouse construction paralleled building practices of National Park Service The us coast Guard, by Dr http://www.nightbeacon.com/zprofiles/Wood_Stone_Lighthouse_Construction_Types.ht
Extractions: Above photo of Grand Island East Channel Lighthouse Wood is one of the earliest lighthouse construction materials. Wood had become the most common construction material since it could be supplied inexpensively from nearby woods and mills. Architectural styles were diverse and even early uses of a lamp on a post could serve small harbors. Few early wooden towers survive because of their susceptibility to fire. Other wooden lighthouses that are not maintained over a period of time rot after a period of time. Stone The stone towers were built simply by piling one stone on top of another. These stones were held together by mortar. Since the walls apparently contained no additional support such as reinforcing rods, they had to be tapered as they rose in order for the base to support the ever increasing weight and to prevent the tower from becoming unstable. Therefore, the higher they wished to build the light, the thicker the tower had to be at the base. Given the flat nature of east coast geography, where all pre-federal lights were built, there was a need to build the lighthouses as tall as possible. Since colonial lights peaked at about 90 feet, we may assume that this was the maximum practical height for a tower built during this era.

Extractions: If you are bothered by seasickness or think you might be, then a river or coastal cruise is definitely a cruise of choice and something you should try. On the American Eagle the biggest swells we saw were the ones made by our own wake as we meandered through grassy marshes, lazed up the river, and sauntered along the Intracoastal. The waters were so smooth you could see the trails of water as anhingas and cormorants flap, flap, flapped off the water. The ship has 31 cabins, individually climate-controlled. All have entrances from interior corridors, have picture windows that open, and a small but nicely done private bath with shower. Some staterooms have outside verandahs; some are handicap-equipped, some have a TV. There is an elevator between the deck with the dining room and the deck with the observation lounge and library. Extractions: The Gingerbread House The "Savannah Gingerbread" was built in the Steamboat Gothic Style in 1899 by merchant, Cord Asendorf. Asendorf designed all of the gingerbread spindles and bric-a-brac himself to "outgingerbread" everyone else in town. His daughter lived in the house until it was sold in the early 1970's then she protested when the new owners altered the color scheme from a subtle white to multicolored. She insisted that the house had always been white, though there are turn of the century photographs which suggest otherwise. In 1874, Captain Churchill married a distant cousin, Lois Churchill. They moved to Savannah, where he established the headquarters for Churchill Steamship Lines. They acquired this house in the 1890s for their winter residence. Some of the architectural features of the house were symbolic of a sea captain's home during the early part of the 20th century. These details include the braided rope design around the exterior front door and the rope ship-rail balustrade of the veranda. After the passing of both of the Churchills in the 1920s, the house was sold and operated first as a boarding house and later converted to an apartment house. In 1984, a group of investors purchased the house and renovated it into the Forsyth Park Inn.

Extractions: Crew Quarters and Office Building The Port Orford Lifeboat Station (Coast Guard Station #318) was commissioned in 1934 to provide lifesaving service to the southern portion of the Oregon coast. The station served the area until its decommissioning in 1970. The station at Port Orford was one of the three earliest Coast Guard stations constructed in Oregon (earlier stations had been built by the U.S. Life-Saving Service). Neither of the other two Coast Guard-built station retains the degree of integrity as found here. Port Orfords station complex gracefully combines Cape Cod and classical building forms with Craftsman features, and with its cedar shingles, presents a style typical of the Pacific coast. Lifeboat stations built during the 1920's through the 1940's represented the highest achievements in Coast Guard architecture. After World War II, station designs changed, making them more military in character. Although simple, the Port Orford station compound exemplifies Oregons Coast Guard Stations and is the only Chatham-type station remaining on the coast.

The Broads, a network of navigable lakes and rivers reaches to the Northern boundary of the area with one of the most attractive, Oulton Broad. Local agriculture is mixed with both arable and livestock and so as well as fields of sugar beet, vegetables, oil-seed rape, wheat and barley there are also the traditional sights of lambs in the Spring and cows grazing in the fields and this fine example of a tithe barn at Herringfleet is a good indication of a once prosperous rural community.
