Hudson River Cruises And Ferries In New York's Hudson Valley his name would eventually connect the east coast to America s deactivated in 1947 by the us coast Guard because on behalf of all the Hudson River lighthouses. http://www.hudsonriver.com/lighthouses.htm
Extractions: When Henry Hudson sailed up the North River in search of the Northwest Passage little did he know that someday the river bearing his name would eventually connect the east coast to America's heartland via the Erie Canal. In the years that followed his discovery, river towns used the river to transport their goods to New York City and upstate New York. To help guide these ships, they established a series of post lights to mark dangerous spots along the river, but this unorganized system proved unreliable. When the Erie Canal opened in 1825 and commercial river traffic increased, the U.S. Lighthouse Establishment felt the need for a more sophisticated system of lights. In 1826, the Stony Point Lighthouse was the first to shine its light on the Hudson, starting a system of lights that eventually grew to 14 lighthouses and numerous post lamps to guide mariners safely the length of the river. The seven lighthouses that exist today along the Hudson River are a tribute to the preservation groups that have worked long and dedicated hours in restoring, preserving and keeping these maritime treasures alive. The Hudson River Lighthouse Coalition is dedicated to enhancing these efforts and guaranteeing that the Hudson lighthouses will shine forever.

Extractions: Lighthouses not only symbolize hope, constancy and a friend in stormy times, many are fascinating architectural masterpieces. The earliest light, simply a bonfire built on a hillside to guide ships, served the old world city of Alexandria in 285 B.C. Americas first lighthouse was built in 1716 at Boston Harbor. Since then, hundreds of lighthouses have been built in this country and guided ships safely into harbor. This is our list of the best American lighthouses.
East End Lighthouses the last of the masonry structures built on the east coast. Colony) sold the property to the us Government The redbrick, 2 story lighthouse was constructed in http://www.greenport.com/lighthouses/welcome.htm
Extractions: Back To Greenport RACE ROCK LIGHTHOUSE The Gothic Revival-styled Race Rock Lighthouse marks a most dangerous location with perhaps hundreds of shipwrecks to its dubious credit, including the steamer "Atlantic" in November 1846 in which 45 people perished. Its' completion in 1878 marked the end of masonry lighthouses on wave swept or water-bound sites. Most of all, it is a fitting monument to its courageous engineers, Francis Hopkinson Smith and Captain Thomas Albertson Scott. The construction on the "Bowler"(really a ledge that is 3 to 13 feet below water) required 7 years, thousands of tons of reprap, numerous acts of courage and amazing persistence. Smith also built the government seawall at Governors Island,NY and the foundation for the Statue of Liberty in New York Harbor. Back up to top PLUM ISLAND LIGHTHOUSE (PHOTO) In 1826, Richard Jerome sold 3 acres of the 840 acre island to the U.S. Government for $90.00, and the first beacon, a 40 foot rough stone tower, on Plum Island was constructed. In 1869/1870 the current masonry structure was built. This 158 year old granite lighthouse marked the treacherous waters off the western point of Plum Island for many years. Originally it had 350,000 candle power and range of 14 miles before it was discontinued in June of 1978 and replaced by a small beacon. The structure is owned by the United States Department of Agriculture who are making plans for its restoration. The fourth order Fresnel lens and clockworks have been restored to operating condition and are a principal feature in the East End Seaport's Maritime Museum in Greenport.

Cape May New Jersey Home Page remains one of the most successful commercial fishing ports on the east coast. 1859, this is one of the oldest continually operating lighthouses in the us. http://www.pressofatlanticcity.com/shoreguide/towns/capemay.html
Extractions: Highly acclaimed and award-winning restaurants go hand in hand with the Victorian i nns and distinguish Cape May from other towns. The resort has been provided an escape for city dwellers since the days when U.S. Presidents Benjamin Harrison and Ulysses S. Grant spent summers here in the 19th century. Cape May is also the only New Jersey seaside resort where you can watch the sunset over the water from the beach (Sunset Beach is located at the southernmost part of town.) Whale-watching and fishing charters leave from Cape May, which remains one of the most successful commercial fishing ports on the East Coast. Sightseeing tours on tall ships are also available in season.. Another fun family activity is searching the bay-side beaches for Cape May diamonds (really quartz stones that have been polished smooth by the movement of the tides). While on that side of town, you may want to check out the Cape May Lighthouse, Cape May Point State Park. Built in 1859, this is one of the oldest continually operating lighthouses in the U.S.

East Brother Light Station (us coast Guard). As with the first set of lighthouses built on the West coast, the plans used at east Brother were also used, with modifications, at http://www.ebls.org/book/alight.htm
Extractions: A Light Station for East Brother San Francisco Bay ranks among the world's great natural harbors. Though the Golden Gate at its narrowest point is but a mile wide, it opens into a bay covering nearly 450 square miles. The bay has not none harbor but dozens along its one hundred miles of meandering shoreline. San Francisco Bay proper stretches from Alviso near San Jose in the south to points San Pablo and San Pedro in the north. Between these two points lies San Pablo Strait. The two islands called The Brothers mark the east side of the strait, a quarter mile off point San Pablo. On the west side are two similar islands named The Sisters. It is not known who named these two sets of islands or mountains in this way. Two islands also called The Brothers lie just south of Cape Mendocino in Humboldt County. The names for the San Francisco Bay islands became official in 1851 when the U.S. Coast Survey used them in preparing the first accurate map of the bay.
