The reason observatories are built in remote areas is to get away from obtrusive lighting, smog and other bad "seeing" conditions, astronomers are not anti-social. A lot of planning must go into site selection to take advantage of the clear steady air in unpopulated areas. It is useless to build a facility that costs millions of dollars only to have its useful life cut short by the growth of a new city. For amateur astronomers the problem of light pollution becomes a nightmare. Light from shops, sports grounds and yard lighting limit, if not end totally, the usefulness of the "backyard observatory". Apart from the simple pleasure of looking at the night sky, the work of some amateurs supplements the work of professionals. These amateurs should be regarded as unpaid professional observers. The main function of a telescope is to amplify light from distant objects, as these objects are very faint. Stray light has the effect of washing out the contrast and reducing the image quality. If you turn up the brightness on your TV you can simulate the effect. The higher the brightness the more the image deteriorates. For an astronomer, that light YOU leave on in the back yard, or those flood lights in the driveway, can mean the end to any chance of using a telescope on all but the brightest of objects.

The first national law prohibiting 'light pollution' comes into effect there tomorrow. From 1 June, all outdoor light fixtures in the country must be shielded to ensure light goes only in the direction intended, and not above the horizontal. Light from street and road signs bounces off molecules in the atmosphere, making skies, especially over cities, less dark. This light pollution is a particular problem for astronomers. Even low levels of man-made light from distant cities can obscure their view of faint objects far away in space. Czech astronomers who lobbied for the legislation are delighted, but everyone should benefit from the new law, they say. "My fellow citizens are as concerned as I am about glare from poorly designed lighting. They're happy action was taken," says Jenik Hollan, an astronomer at Nicholas Copernicus Observatory and Planetarium in Brno. Others hope the initiative will catch on elsewhere. "We applaud the Czechs and are committed to helping other governments enact similar legislation," says astronomer David Crawford, executive director of the International Dark-Sky Association, a US-based group that campaigns to curb light pollution.

Millions of people had the opportunity that night to see a sky completely devoid of light pollution and were shocked at what they could see. Those with telescopes excitedly began observing objects that they never expected would be visible from suburbia and shared them with friends and neighbours. Although the onset of moonrise soon after dark caused the Milky Way to be washed out, until then it could easily be seen as from downtown locations.

Star Watch UK is a project to observe and record the brightness of the sky from all parts of the UK. It is an opportunity for everyone, experienced astronomer or the youngest school child, to take part in a nationwide survey. The project is a collaboration between many national organisations , and follows similar surveys undertaken in Japan, the USA and Canada Star Watch UK has two parts: Visual observing - for which you only need your eyes and a pencil, and Photography . Any one can take part in either or both categories by printing out and completing the form and charts available on this site. The RGO will co-ordinate the analysis and a report will be issued at the end of each year. Any data received will be used in a manner appropriate to the survey and may include publication of selected photographs. The project is not a test of the individual observer, the observer is the record keeper of the actual sky brightness in their area.

What ... Where can I find more information? (References) Light-pollution reduction filters (henceforth, LPRFs) do work on some things. They are not a substitute for a clear sky, but they can and do provide improved views of many objects. Furthermore, filters can be of use even in very dark skies, not just ones that are significantly affected by city lights. Filters work by rejecting light in certain frequency ranges. As you may already know, many artificial light sources emit over fairly narrow wavelength ranges. Chief among these are the wavelengths associated with LPS (low-pressure sodium), HPS (high-pressure sodium), and mercury vapor lamps. Sodium lamps produce light centered on the sodium D line at 589 nm (yellow), with HPS covering a much wider range than LPS; mercury lamps produce a number of lines throughout the spectrum, particularly below 450 nm and above 550 nm. All LPRFs are designed to block the wavelength regions associated with these sources.

I pursue my passion for Astronomy, particularly Astrophotography, on those fairly rare transparent nights in Central Ohio. I took these pictures from various locations; however, one scourge exists: EXTREME LIGHT POLLUTION! The caramel glow of wasteful and inefficient outdoor lighting extends some 40 degrees into the sky in every direction around the horizon as seen from my Columbus backyard. The background on this page roughly approximates the appearance of the nighttime sky from my backyard. The lights shining into my property from my neighbors' houses is also a major nuisance. How would you like it if your neighbor played heavy metal music at 120 decibels and directed it towards your house on a constant basis? Heck, neighbors of the local amphitheater, a concert venue drawing all kinds of acts, who are residents of the City of Westerville, have complained for years about the noise from performances staged at the amphitheater. The lack of concern for their quality of life on the part of the City of Columbus (where the amphitheater is located) and the owners of the venue underscore the frustration of those seeking to contain nuisances. Light pollution is equivalent to being subjected to loud noise on a continual basis.
