Amateur Astronomers and Wildlife Associations worldwide regard the increasing light pollution with increasing concern. Electric energy is wasted irrespective of world wide concern on CO2 pollution. Bad street illumination is clearly visible even from space satellites (click for a nightphoto of Europe) , and a new age of sky commercials has started. During the second world war, long range searchlights were applied to detect air-crafts attacking during night time. Today, modern versions of these searchlights are successfully applied by an increasing number of companies for advertising. Companies advertise with long range lasers, able to dominate the sky within a radius of 50 km. In the city of Sonderborg, Denmark, a local high tech company applied a computer controlled long range searchlight beam in short periods, without any public warning. As a result, the local newspaper gave strange eye witness reports: People claimed to have seen a real UFO!

    Extractions: The night-time sky at Yerkes has become increasingly brighter over the last 15 years, due to light pollution. Measurements made in the spring of 1998 showed the sky brightness measured at a 70 degree elevation to be about twice what they were 10 years before. I had noticed that, between 1995 and 1998, the darkness had deteriorated to the extent that I no longer needed a torch (flashlight) to walk home after sunset. In August of 1998 I took a series of horizon pictures from the catwalk of the 40-inch refractor. These pictures were taken just after midnight on a moonless night, with an f/3.5 aperture and 2-minute exposures on ISO 200 film. The pictures below show (going from left to right) the views looking (i) South-West, (ii) South-East, (iii) East and (iv) North-West. Click on a thumbnail for a larger version. As can be seen, the sky is pretty bright. The most suprising thing was to find that the darkest part of the horizon is looking towards the South-East, which is the direction of Chicago! Clearly our light pollution problem is dominated by light from the local communities. In February of 1999 I approached the Williams Bay village board to see if I could give them a presentation on this problem. Williams Bay had a section in its building code on lighting, but it was very limited in its scope and was largely being ignored. In March I gave a presentation to the Village Board which received a favourable response. Over the spring and summer of 1999 I drafted a lighting ordinanace with their input, and this was adopted by Williams Bay in September of 1999.

Some of these are heroes: They save energy, direct light to where it is needed, and add to the ambiance of our nighttime environment. Others are villains that waste energy, spill light in all directions, produce glare, and ruin the beauty of the night. the Villains Globes and similar fixtures. These usually consist of a transparent or translucent "ball" or cylinder with a lamp bulb inside, sitting atop a pole. They look attractive in the daytime when they are not turned on. In fact, this type of fixture is often chosen for this very reason. These lights are villains because when turned on at night, they radiate not only in the direction where illumination is needed, but in all directions - more than half the light is directed upward to add to the sky glow and sideways to cause glare. Much of the rest is not doing any useful work in helping us see the things we need.

The ride from Palestine, Texas on July 6, 2000, however, was pure science, the first of a series of unmanned NASA scientific balloon flights that will measure the ultraviolet (UV) light illuminating the night sky and that may ultimately help solve the mystery of high-energy cosmic rays, which seem to travel through space further than physicists deem possible. The balloon carried an experiment called NIGHTGLOW , a collaboration between NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center (Greenbelt, MD.) and the University of Utah, Salt Lake City. NIGHTGLOW is designed to detect background radiation produced by a variety of sources, including moonlight and starlight, the interaction of oxygen and nitrogen molecules in the atmosphere, human-made lighting, and even the bioluminescence of squid and other animals.
