Extractions: July 18, 2000 To my friends, associates, and others in the libertarian movement: The time has come to end my 24-year association with the Libertarian Party of the United States and/or its affiliates. It has taken me the better part of a year to come to this decision, and it is not taken without trepidation. For the benefit of those who are curious as to my reasons, I will explain them now. I first learned about the Libertarian Party roughly a year after I discovered the writings of Ayn Rand. I was delighted to discover a political party which promoted the ideals of individual rights and responsibility which I had only recently claimed as my own. LP members introduced me to a wide variety of important libertarian writers, which gave me a broader and deeper understanding and appreciation for liberty. I was troubled to find that Rand herself rejected the LP, but as I disagreed with her on a few other points I also dismissed her objections to the LP's lack of an explicit philosophical base. As things developed, this may have been a mistake. I still cherish my memories of the first LP National Convention I attended, the one held in Los Angeles in 1979. I found a virtual Who's Who of the libertarian movement in attendance (at least at a speakers' panel or two if not in the business sessions proper), with discussions on a wide range of topics ranging from fundamental philosophy, to in-depth examinations of various issues, to the nuts-and-bolts of political campaigning. The atmosphere was freewheeling, fun, and revolutionary. I came away from that convention charged up and ready promote both the Party and its cause.

It is sad that the Republican Party wishes to enshrine in our Constitution a piece of Anti-Semitic (for some Jews), Anti-Christian (for some Christians) Gay-bashing, but it is true. Our country was in fair part founded by the likes of the Pilgrims, the Quakers, and the Mennonites, people who came to America to flee religious and other persecution. Now the Republicans want to enshrine religious persecution in the Federal Constitution, which is an act as utterly false to our traditions as can be imagined. I do not propose to run a big organization 'Log Cabin Libertarians' myself. However, sometimes to find the people who will salute an idea, you need to run it up the flagpole. Libertarianism is a political philosphy. The term "libertarian" dates at least as far back as 1789, arising from the turbulence of both the American and French revolutions. There are probably as many "strict" definitions of the term as there are libertarians. But in general, libertarians combine the strong defense of individual civil liberties, due process, social tolerance (religous, lifestyle choices, etc.), open immigration, and nonconformity espoused by modern day "liberals" with an equally strong defense of free markets, private property, free trade, radically reduced government and international noninterventionism often espoused by conservatives. In the World's Smallest Political Quiz you can begin to see how this combination arises. The traditional left-right axis between liberal and conservative covers only part of the picture. Essentially both sides want government involved in a good deal of a priavte citizen's life, it's only a question of where. Liberals tend to favor government intervention and planning in economic matters, but leave social issues up to the individual. Conservatives tend to favor government direction of social issues, personal behavior, and "tough on crime" civil liberties intrusions, but leave economics to the private sector. So I went to the September Business Meeting of the Travis County Libertarian Party , the first time I've ever made the effort to get this close to political activism. I made the decision to do this after finally choosing to act upon a message from the Austin Liberator e-mail list. The message promoted the next event in the Distinguished Speaker Series : Ed Clark from Austin Energy , who'll be speaking about deregulation, the California energy mess, the recent northeast blackout, and other things. After calling Rick McGinnis (a very friendly guy) to confirm a slot, I figured I should check out the TCLP and get a personal feel for the people there. They usually meet at the Old Quarry Library on 7501 Village Center Drive off Far West Blvd from 6:45pm till 8. I screwed up and didn't find the place in time back last year when I resolved to check them out, but I got there early and made it fine tonight. The atmosphere was relaxed and mostly productive. Patrick Dixon, the TCLP Chair, got things moving. Having the attitude I have towards formal organizations, it took me a bit to adjust to the format of the proceedings. Recognizings, reports, agendas, minutes, and all that. I apparently picked a good night to drop by, as several folks mentioned attendance was the highest they'd seen in some time.
