Read and enjoy Feline Leukemia is a retrovirus that is responsible for more deaths in cats than any other single cause. It was discovered in 1969 and believed to have originated from rat chromosomal DNA. There are ways of protecting a cat from this virus and it is also an easily detectable virus, but once the disease infects, chances of survival are small. Feline Leukemia has the same effect as AIDS does in people, it destroys the cat's immune system.(1) The cat's immune system can limit or eliminate the virus. About 40% of cats extinguish the virus with 16% of these fighting it off due to minimal exposure to the virus because of their isolated behavior and the other 24% resist the disease at phase 4. All of this usually occurs between 16-18 weeks after the FeLV infection began. About 20% of the cats put the disease in a latent stage. The disease will remain in this latent stage until the cat becomes stressed and then FeLV will re-emerge. About 5-10% of cats go through a sequestered stage in which viremia is limited, intermittent, or absent altogether. However the cat can still shed the virus through blood, urine, and in its milk. This leaves a total of about 30% of cats that just go through the disease from start to finish normally resulting in death.(1) Testing for cats is important, because a viremic cat may seem healthy but its immune system can be so surpressed that even a weak virus can initiate a disease. The cat would also still be shedding the virus and transmitting it to other cats. There are three tests the IFA, ELISA, and VI tests. Indirect Immunefluorescence Assay(IFA) looks for structural antigens in cytoplasm of FeLV cells and was the first practical diagnosis test for any animal retrovirus. VI test measures the number of replicating FeLV particles in plasma, serum, saliva, urine, tissue fluids, tissue homogenates, or spent tissue culture medium. IFA and IV are the best tests with a correlation of 98% between the two. Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay(ELISA) tests for soluble p27 in serum, saliva, tears, tissue, fluid, or solubized tissue homogenates. The overall agreement of the ELISA and IFA is 49%, but it has same day results where the others take 10-14 days and are very expensive.(1)

We have learned quickly how important a hug, a kiss, the smell of ones skin, and the sound of a heart beat trully is. We no longer take for granted the simple pleasures in life. We laugh more, we cry more, and we love more. Samantha has touched so many lives in the last two years and we are amazed by her spirit. She continues to live each day as if she won't get a tomorrow. She is fully aware that life doesn't give you do-overs, so she makes sure that each moment counts. We, as her parents, are so privlaged to call her our daughter Today is February 8, 2004. She will enter into her third year of treatment starting tomorrow. This year, she will finish her treatment and move onto a new life without taking chemo every day. She has become a beautiful young lady. When she started this journey of having cancer she was only 9 years old. Now, Sammy is 11 and in the 5th grade. She plays the violin, takes karate classes, is a straight A student, and has lots of friends. When she is feeling good, she goes until her body won't let her anymore. We can never tell her to just take it easy. She always wants to be on the go and hanging out with her friends or family.She is our hero.

(CNN) In 1998, Barenaked Ladies hit it big with the catchy pop tune "One Week." But as the song climbed the charts, the band's keyboardist, Kevin Hearn, was fighting for his life. The symptoms had started the year before. First was the cough that wouldn't go away. It was followed by a loss of appetite, fatigue and bloody noses. "That's when I went crazy," Hearn said. "I never get bloody noses." Hearn went in for a checkup, and when the results came back, his doctor gave him the first hint there could be a serious problem. As Hearn recalls, "She came back and said, 'I want to send you to a specialist to have an ultrasound. If you can call a family member, that will be a good idea.'" That was the day Hearn found out he had leukemia. "When I heard it was a form of cancer, I started to worry and I was in denial," Hearn says. "I asked the doctor when [could] I go back to work. He put his hand on my shoulder and said, 'You might not go back to work. You might not be alive in five months.' I broke down and cried."

There are a variety of Leukemias, each with its own peculiar signs, symptoms, prognosis and behavior. Approximately 30,000 Americans develop some sort of leukemia every year. There are four major types of leukemia: Acute Leukemia refers to Leukemia which, if left untreated, can cause fatal complications in a very short period of time. Chronic Leukemias, on the other hand, if left untreated in some cases may not cause any immediate problems at all, even for years. Hairy Cell Leukemia is an entity of its own that will be discussed separately. When Leukemias progress, they can cause a rise or decline in the number of blood cells. Even though the total number of blood cells may be elevated, in most instances, the count of normal blood cells is reduced. This is due to overproduction of the leukemic cells that result in overpopulation of the bone marrow and suppression of normal blood cell production.

It wasn't even the crippling back pain that left him virtually immobilized. It was the odd red stripe that Kathy Keller noticed running down the back of her husband's calf that prompted his sudden trip to the emergency room. Following his evaluation, the physical education teacher from Frederick, Md., learned that the red stripe was a blood clot. He also learned that he had leukemia and needed immediate medical attention. "I hastily left our two young children in the care of their grandparents because Neil was being transported quickly by ambulance to a special cancer center in Baltimore," remembers Kathy Keller. "It happened just that quickly." According to the American Cancer Society (ACS), about 30,000 new cases of leukemia were diagnosed in the United States in 2001. And even though it is thought of primarily as a childhood disease, the ACS says that leukemia strikes more adults than children. Anyone can get it, and like many forms of cancer, its cause is unknown. Certain risk factors, such as genetic conditions or adverse environmental exposure, are believed to increase the chances of developing the disease. Survival is strongly linked to age at diagnosis and the type of leukemia. Fortunately, the overall five-year survival rate for people with leukemia has tripled over the past 40 years. In 1960, the rate was 14 percent. By the 1970s, it had reached 35 percent. Today, the overall five-year survival rate is 44 percent.
