Welcome and thank you for visiting my web page. My name is Michael Cook , and I am a survivor of Childhood Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. I was diagnosed in 1995 when I was 21 years old. I was treated at University of California San Francisco Comprehensive Cancer Center with chemotherapy, some surgeries, a short while on dialysis, and radiation. If you are a patient of, or know someone who is a patient of leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkins disease, or multiple myeloma, then this web site may be of some benefit to you. My intention for building this web site is to provide supplemental information by listing links to other web sites dealing with leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkins Disease, NHL, and a few other blood disorders and metabolism disorders. Additional ATSDR Studies The cluster of childhood leukemia cases was brought to the attention of Nevada public health officials in the late summer of 2000, when it was learned that five cases of Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia (ALL) had been diagnosed in Churchill County within a few months of each other. The Health Division immediately consulted with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on appropriate steps for an investigation. To date, fifteen children have been diagnosed with ALL and one with Acute Myelocytic Leukemia (AML), all of whom lived in Churchill County for varying lengths of time prior to diagnosis. Dr. Randall Todd, State Epidemiologist, noted that based on cases reported to the Nevada Central Cancer Registry, an average rate of Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia is about 3 childhood cases per 100,000 children.

Extractions: Just a quick update to let you know that Alex had the LP (lumbar puncture) on Tuesday and the results came back yesterday. Zero leukemia blasts in her CNS! At this point it's possible that the seizure was caused by whatever respiratory virus all four of us currently have. It also appears that the seizure triggered the increase in her White Blood Count (WBC). As of Tuesday her WBC was back down to normal range. Because of the virus, Alex is going to miss school all of this week and next week is Easter break. As long as there are no further complications she'll return the school after the break. Thanks again to everyone for helping us through yet another crisis. Take care. We're out of the hospital! Alex had an MRI today and although the calcifications (scarring) from her prior radiation and chemo treatments remain, there was nothing there to cause alarm. The doctors feel that she will remain stable as long as she remains on Depakote, an anti-seizure medication. What this means is that Alex will more than likely have to take Depakote for the rest of her life to avoid future seizures. The doctors also didn't feel it was necessary to do the LP (lumbar puncture) before we left the hospital today. We should know by Monday when it will be scheduled for.

Extractions: Acute lymphocytic leukemia, also called acute lymphoblastic leukemia and acute lymphoid leukemia, is a common leukemia. About 4,000 new cases are diagnosed each year in the United States. Most cases of acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL) occur in children under age 10, but it can appear in all age groups. ALL is an acute leukemia, which means it is a disease that gets worse quickly. ALL is not inherited. It is caused by a change in the cells in the bone marrow. In most cases, no one knows why this change occurs, but a few environmental factors are linked with ALL. These include high doses of radiation and exposure to toxins before birth or in early childhood. Symptoms and Diagnosis In a healthy person, the bone marrow makes the blood stem cells that turn into the white blood cells, red blood cells and platelets in the blood. An ALL patient's marrow makes too many blast cells (immature white blood cells). These blast cells should turn into the white blood cells called lymphocytes, but they do not. So many blast cells grow that the marrow does not have room to make the normal red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets. This causes these symptoms of ALL:

Extractions: Acute myelogenous leukemia (AML) is also known by several other names, including acute myeloblastic leukemia, acute myelocytic leukemia and acute nonlymphocytic leukemia. AML is not inherited or contagious. It develops when there is a defect in the immature cells in the bone marrow. The exact cause of AML is unknown, but some environmental factors are linked with AML, including exposure to radiation and benzene. AML occurs in all ages but more often in older adults. Extractions: What is Leukemia? Leukemia is a cancer that starts in the organs that make blood, namely the bone marrow (the soft inner part of the bone) and the lymph system. In leukemia, abnormal and immature white blood cells are produced in the bone marrow and lymph system. The immature white blood cells are called leukocytes. In some individuals, leukocytes are so numerous that the blood actually has a whitish tinge. When abnormal and immature white blood cells are produced, production of normal cells decreases and the ability to fight infection decreases. The ability to fight infection decreases because the leukemic cells accumulate and lessen the production of oxygen-carrying red blood cells, blood-clotting cells (platelets), and normal leukocytes. If left untreated, the surplus leukemic cells overwhelm the bone marrow, enter the bloodstream, and will eventually invade other parts of the body, such as the lymph nodes, spleen liver , and the brain , and spinal cord.

Extractions: Treatment The acute leukemias account for about one third of childhood cancer, and about three quarters of these leukemias are ALL (the others being AML or acute undifferentiated leukemia). In general, ALL has a better outcome than AML. Lymphoblasts can be distinguished from myeloblasts in a number of ways: Perinuclear chromatin More prominent nucleoli ALL blasts are derived from either B-cell or T-cell lineages, as determined by cell surface and other markers. A small percentage of the cells are either so primitive that they do not express enough markers to identify, and these comprise the AUL category. As more markers are elucidated, the number of leukemias falling into this wastebasket category is declining. The mixed cell leukemias represent another difficulty for classification: they are not clearly B or T cells and may represent a very early precursor (perhaps of both lines) or lineage infidelity.
