When a child has leukemia, large numbers of abnormal white blood cells are produced in the bone marrow. These abnormal white cells crowd the bone marrow and flood the bloodstream, but they cannot perform their proper role of protecting the body against disease because they are defective. As leukemia progresses, the cancer interferes with the body's production of other types of blood cells, including red blood cells and platelets. This results in anemia (low numbers of red cells) and bleeding problems, in addition to the increased risk of infection caused by white cell abnormalities. Initially, abnormal leukemia cells appear only in the bone marrow and blood , but later they may spread elsewhere, including the lymph nodes, spleen , liver, brain , and testes. [ ] As assays have become more sensitive for detecting monoclonal B-CLL-like cells in peripheral blood, researchers have detected a monoclonal lymphocytosis of undetermined significance (MLUS, in analogy to the monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance, MGUS) in 3% of individuals over 40 years of age and 6% in those over 60 years of age. [ ] Such earlier diagnosis and recognition of cases that would never have crossed the threshold of diagnosis previously may falsely suggest improved survival for the group and may unnecessarily worry or result in therapy for some patients who would have remained undiagnosed in their lifetime, a circumstance known in the literature as overdiagnosis or pseudodisease. At the present time, the natural history or clinical significance of these findings is unknown.

Approximately 35% to 40% of adults with ALL can be expected to survive 2 years with aggressive induction combination chemotherapy and effective supportive care during induction therapy (appropriate early treatment of infection, hyperuricemia, and bleeding). The examination of bone marrow aspirates and/or biopsy specimens should be done by an experienced oncologist, hematologist, hematopathologist, or general pathologist who is capable of interpreting conventional and specially stained specimens. Diagnostic confusion with acute myelocytic leukemia (AML), hairy-cell leukemia, and malignant lymphoma is not uncommon. Proper diagnosis is crucial because of the difference in prognosis and treatment of ALL and AML. Immunophenotypic analysis is essential because leukemias that do not express myeloperoxidase include M0 and M7 AML as well as ALL.

HISTORY Jennifer Stroud was a typical five year old girl with a mommy, daddy and brother living in Dallas, Texas. She loved to play dolls, loved her favorite cuddly Molly, giggled, laughed, played and skipped with her friends. Around Thanksgiving 1993, we noticed she was tiring and started to run a low grade fever. We also noticed she was starting to bruise easily when she bumped into things. Lynn took her to the pediatrician who ran a blood test and told her on Christmas Eve, December 24, 1993, that she needed to go to a hospital because she may have leukemia. Later that day, we were told by the doctors she had leukemia, and later that evening that it was acute myeloid leukemia, and she started emergency treatment called leukapheresis, which cycled her blood through a filter to decrease the amount of white blood cells. Her condition was classified as critical.

This makes it one of the oldest and most enduring sporting events. Less than 1% of the population has done a Marathon, and very few of those are cancer survivors. I do these events to celebrate life & survival, and to raise funds to help others fight cancer. I am going for the Disney World Marathon again! Training for the 2003-2004 marathon season has begun!
