Extractions: LESOTHO The Southern African Botanical Diversity Network ( SABONET ) is a capacity-building network of southern African herbaria and botanic gardens with the objective of developing local botanical expertise. The ten countries participating in SABONET are Angola, Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland, Zambia and Zimbabwe; these cou ntries cover an area of some 6 million square kilometres. SABONET's objectives are to develop a strong core of professional botanists, taxonomists, horticulturists and plant diversity specialists within the ten countries of southern Africa, competent to inventory, monitor, evaluate and conserve the botanical diversity of the region in the face of specific development challenges, and to respond to the technical and scientific needs of the Convention on Biological Diversity. SABONET is a GEF (Glob al Environment Facility) Project implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). South Africa's National Botanical Institute (NBI) is the Executing Agency, responsible for the overall management and administration of the project. In addition to the GEF/UNDP funding, the project is co-funded by the USAID/IUCN ROSA through the NETCAB (Regional Networking and Capacity Building Initiative) Programme.

She visits Robben Island , where President Nelson Mandela was held prisoner for 18 of his 27 years in prison. She speaks to an ex-political prisoner who lived in the cell opposite to Mandela for 7 years. The townships in Cape Town are the scene of much history and political strife. Justine explores a Cape Town township and visits a Sanoma - a South African faith healer. From Cape Town Justine heads east on board the Trans Karoo Express , through the lush wine regions north of Cape Town, then into the arid landscape known as the Great Karoo . She stays with an Africaan family in Laingsaburg and rides an ostrich in Oudtshoorn.

It has one of the lowest population densities in the world and bizarre desert scenery. Huge sand dunes, dry desert mountains, and amazing plant and animal life are some of the highlights. Etosha Game Park is one of the best game parks in Southern Africa. It is home to many lions, rhinos, elephants, buffalo and hippos. All sorts of less well known but equally interesting creatures (like bat-eared foxes and honey badgers) are also found there. The peoples of Namibia are diverse and interesting. They include one of the oldest cultures on earth: the San or "Bushman" peoples. The German colonization of Namibia has resulted in a peculiar cultural mix. Parts of the country still have a fascinating German colonial atmosphere and culture.
Extractions: by MaryAnn Camp , Ha Rantubu, Lesotho Having lived in Hu Rantubu, Lesotho, now 15 months, I have learned several cultural rituals connected with water. As in a lot of cultures, the religious ceremony of Baptism is one. I have seen water sprinkled over a baby's head. Another religious observance is during the "phu phu" (funeral)water is sprinkled on the casket with a small branch (representing an olive branch). The water has been blessed by the clergy and, therefore, becomes holy water. After the sprinkling of the water on the casket, the remaining is poured over the casket at the gravesite before lowering the casket. Another ritual where water is used is if a witch doctor has put a curse on you or your family and you want to break the curse. One fills a clay pot with water and takes it to a place of water, i.e., a pond, creek, or river. The pot is laid near the water and with a stick, a swift blow is delivered to the vessel releasing the contents into the nearby water source. This is supposed to break the spell or curse. by Claire Hilger , Christ the King Mission, Qachas Nek, Lesotho Lesotho is a very dry country, so water is revered. Rain and snow are greeted by dancing and singing. We had no snow this year, and it is very dry. People are not planting and are worried that there will be no harvest this year. To alleviate the problem, one of the nuns from the mission asked some students to play the 'lesokoana' game. (A lesokoana is the thick stick used to stir the 'papa,' a thick porridge of maize meal that is eaten at every meal with vegetables and/or meat.) Each family has its own lesokoana, which is cut from the branch of a tree; the bark is removed and the stick becomes smooth with use. A few of my students accompanied me to the edge of the cliff where we could watch the game.

In this unit, students compare the division of labor around water-related work in rural Lesotho to their own households. By doing this, they will gain an understanding of the multiple factors that influence how gender role formation takes place in different societies. This unit culminates with students writing letters in the voice of visitors to the United States from Lesotho. Timeframe:

This means it can rightly be called the highest entire country in the world . It is a land of no fences and few roads. The only transport in the interior is pony, donkey or your own two feet. This tiny Kingdom sits bang smack in the middle of South Africa with a fascinating culture all of its own. Dinosaurs were the first inhabitants of Lesotho, as seen from the many footprints left plodded into solidified mud. Later the San Bushmen left their mark with stunning rock paintings adorning hidden caves . The dinosaurs faded out, but the Bushmen were forced out, by displaced tribes fleeing from the violent Shaka Zulu in 1820. These Basotho One very noticeable thing about the Basotho people is their love of song. In the remotest valley, you will hear the serene sounds of a herd boy singing with a strong, pure, perfect pitch voice. In the villages, all the children form a choir and harmonise in a way that can only be heard in Africa. These sounds echoing across the mountains touch your very soul.

Extractions: Music: Shostakovich: Complete Symphonies - I currently own 5 versions of the 14th symphony (Kondrashin, Bernstein, Barshai (a relay of the preimiere in Moscow), Haitink, and another Rostropovich version on the Russian Revelation label. The Bernstein is saggy and contrived, the Haitink fails to excite, the earlier Rostropovich is in terrible audio, The Kondrashin is excellent and full of white heat, and the Barshai is even more hair raising. And where does this version of the 14th belong? Among the very best. This perfomance's soloists were the original soloists Shostakovich intended (Vishnevskaya and Rhestin). The orchestra though different from the primiere is still excellent. When listening to the Haitink, the orchestra plays with emotional reservation. Not the case here Music: Best Opera Album In The World - In addition to the great male tenors, Maria Callas, Victoria de los Angeles, Renata Scotto, Helga Dernesch, Dame Kiri Te Kanawa, Elizabeth Schwarzkopf, Mirella Freni, Madi Mespli, and others sing the great arias. This double CD will make you cry, it is so beautiful, and this from someone who never paid much attention to opera. I listen to it only about once a week, so I won't get tired of it, and after several months it still grabs my by the throat and makes tears run down my face. In 40 years of listening to rock and pop, I have never experienced this before. Buy it!

Contact information INTRODUCTION The Declaration and Treaty establishing the Southern African Development Community (SADC), which has replaced the Co-ordination Conference was signed at the Summit of Heads of State Government on 17 July 1992, in Windhoek, Namibia. The Southern African Development Community (SADC) is promising to create a 130 million-person southern African common market by 2000. This economic community is dedicated to the ideals of free trade, free movement of people, a single currency, democracy, and respect for human rights. Member states are Angola, Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. HISTORY The S outhern A frican D evelopment C ommunity (SADC), formerly known as the Southern African Development Coordination Conference (SADCC), was born out of the positive experiences of closer cooperation among the governments and peoples of southern Africa. In May 1979, the Foreign Ministers of the Frontline States met in Gabarone, Botswana, to discuss economic cooperation. At this time they aggred to convene an international conference in Arusha, Tanzania. This meeting led to the Arusha Conference in July 1979, which brought together government and international agency representatives from all over the world, to discuss cooperation in the southern part of Africa. Extractions: October 2002 I had never even heard of Lesotho until I found a separate section for it in our Lonely Planet guide. That's the great thing about travelling, it is a constant education that never fails to ignite your passion for exploration. Coercing a reluctant Tom, it wasn't long before we were standing in a line at immigration, waiting for our visa stamp. We stated on our visa form that our expected length of stay would be three days, little realising that the uncooperative lady on the desk would enforce this to the letter. We didn't know that a fourteen day visa is granted automatically - we should have written fourteen days on our form. Considering this, I couldn't understand why she would be so inflexible. We miscalculated how many days we needed and complained, so she grudgingly gave us an extra day. If Lesotho wants to encourage tourism, it should educate its immigration officials and grant the fourteen days regardless.
