Jenny Davis tells the story of her visit to the "Forest of Joy" outside Kathmandu. A road leading up to the Forest of Joy I am a microbiologist in an Australian public health laboratory. We have modern equipment and use sophisticated methods to investigate infectious disease problems in our community. But I've wondered about how much use this technology would be if I was in a lab in a developing country -basic health needs mean basic lab techniques, right? Then last year, I heard Australian immunologist Dr Paul Roche speak about his research work with leprosy in Nepal. I thought Paul was great. He was very aware of the ethics of conducting research in a developing country; he was keen to apply cutting-edge techniques to solve complex problems; and best of all, he was enthusiastic about the sharing of skills with his Nepali scientific colleagues. I decided to visit him at the Mycobacterial Research Laboratory at Anandaban Leprosy Hospital, Nepal.

Leprosy is a rare disease in the United States. In 1999, there were 9 cases reported among New York City residents (rate of 0.1 cases per 100,000 persons). Who gets leprosy? It is not clear how the leprosy germ is spread, but household and prolonged close contact is important. The germs probably enter the body through the nose, and possibly through broken skin. The germs get in the air through the nasal discharge of untreated lepromatous patients. What are the symptoms of leprosy? There are two types of leprosy: tuberculoid and lepromatous. Patients with tuberculoid leprosy symptoms have a few well-defined lesions that are usually numb. Symptoms of lepromatous leprosy include a chronically stuffy nose and multiple skin lesions and nodules. How soon after infection do the symptoms appear?

For more details about me return to my professional page Ms Jann Hennessy is the A/Supervising Scientist for the Microbiology Laboratory. We are currently recruiting a new Supervising Scientist. My registrar for 2004 is Dr John Kelly. He is an infectious diseases physician and will hopefully then continue to train in microbiology. We have another two scientist positions (although some technician positions are filled with degree holders) in the "Bacteriology" Section of the laboratory. There are another five technician positions within Bacteriology. Our "Serology" Section has one scientist and four technician positions. Serology covers traditional serology and some molecular microbiology. The staff of the Microbiology Laboratory and Serology Laboratory, RDH are an excellent group of motivated microbiologists. I am very fortunate to have them working under my direction. The work load varies markedly between the two seasons in the Top End. During the Dry Season (Winter) the work load drops to very comfortable levels. This reduction in work load allows the staff to recharge for the Wet Season (Summer) which gets very busy.
