Its geographic position as a crossroads linking the Mediterranean Basin with the great Asian  hinterland has conferred on it a cosmopolitan character and a multicultural legacy. At different periods of its history, Lebanon has come under the domination of foreign rulers, including Assyrians, Babylonians, Persians, Greeks, Romans, Arabs, Ottomans, and French. Although often conquered, Lebanon was never subdued, the Lebanese take pride in their rebellions against despotic and repressive rulers. Moreover, despite foreign domination, Lebanon's mountainous terrain has provided it with a certain protective isolation, enabling it to survive with an identity all its own. Its proximity to the sea has ensured that throughout its history Lebanon has held an important position as a trading center. This tradition of commerce began with the Phoenicians and continued through many centuries, remaining almost unaffected by foreign rule and the worst periods of internal strife. Lebanon Another explanation of the name is in the Hittite and Hurrite words for "cypress" and "juniper" which are very similar in appearance when compared to the Hittite and Hurrite words for "Lebanon Mountains". It is possible that the cedars of Lebanon could have been the source of the name of both the mountain and the country. In various ancient languages, the name differed only slightly: "Levanon" in Hebrew, "Libnah" in Phoenician, "Labnanu" in Assyrian, and "Lablani" or "Niblani" in Hittite.

In the early years of the 17th Century, the Emir Fakhred-Dine II Maan (1572 - 1634) extended his power throughout these princedoms thus coming to rule an area corresponding to the present-day Lebanon. He transferred his capital from Baaqline to Deir El Qamar, but also had his seat of government in Sidon and Beirut, particularly after the Sultan extended his power from the north of Syria to central Palestine. At the end of the 17th Century, the Maan dynasty died out and their lands were inherited by the Chehab family, Emirs of Waditaim. Following the usual customs which at the time served as the basis for government in the Lebanon, the feudal lords recognized the Chehabs and the Sultan accorded their investiture. Their palaces were situated around the central square of Deir el Qamar throughout the 18th Century. At the end of the 18th Century, Emir Youssef found himself in difficulties with the Sultan's representatives, the neighboring pachas. He preferred to retire, and abdicated in favor of Emir Bechir II since his own children were not yet of age.

One of these is a detailed history of how and why Israel is in Lebanon in the first place. This task has fallen upon my shoulders and forms the majority of what follows and historical analysis will make up the remainder. This history will not, however, bring us to the present day because the task of handling Israel’s part in this scenario has proved so daunting that two persons have been given the responsibility of covering the Israeli element. Therefore, present day activities and those which must occur in order to bring the future scenario to fruition will be covered in the paper which follows. History On 6 June 1982 Israel invaded Lebanon and has been there ever since. The final pretext for the invasion was provided just three days before with the near fatal shooting of Shlomo Argov, Israel’s ambassador to London. Israel originally claimed that it invaded in order to stop the raids into Israel territory which were staged from southern Lebanon. With Israel’s siege of Beirut, it became clear that Israel’s main goal was to remove the PLO presence from all of Lebanon. The invasion of June, however, was not the first time that Israel had conducted military strikes against Lebanon. Israel, in years prior to 1982, had responded to PLO rocket attacks, which were staged in southern Lebanon’s territory, by bombing Palestinian refugee camps. So in order to understand how and why Israel came to be in Lebanon we must begin many, many years before the invasion. This way, we will be able to have a full appreciation of the Lebanon / Israel situation.

But the City of Lebanon Museum and History Center, scheduled to open this month, has the look and feel of a major museum. After three years of fund raising and work, the basement of the Lebanon City Hall has been transformed into a brief but thorough trip through Lebanon's past. "Most of things we have are on loan, but they are on permanent loan," said James Miller, chairman of the City of Lebanon Historical Commission. "We are hoping that when people see what we have here, many will come forward." Each visitor will be greeted by a recreation of the spring that first attracted Native Americans and, later, white settlers to the area. "The sound of the spring will permeate the museum," Miller said.

    Extractions: Click Here for the City of Lebanon Museum and History Center Before the arrival of the European settlers in the late 1700's, the region around Lebanon, Tennessee was dotted with mounds and sites of fortified villages of the prehistoric Native American Indians. It was their hunting grounds, where wild game abounded in the cane brakes and cedar forests. Wilson County was established by the Tennessee General Assembly on Oct. 26, 1799, three years after Tennessee became a state. On Nov. 13, 1801, the town of Lebanon was authorized. The appointed commissioners chose the land around a gushing spring where in 1800, Neddy Jacobs had built his log cabin. Seeing the spot in a grove of red cedars, commissioner Christopher Cooper said, "This is the place." The cedars gave the place its name, Lebanon, a reminder of the Biblical land of the cedars. On Nov. 23, 1819, the City of Lebanon was officially incorporated. Lebanon, originally called "one of the prettiest of Tennesseeís country towns", became a center of commerce, culture and education. Cumberland University opened in September, 1842 with 45 students. Its first permanent building, located on the southeastern corner of College and East Spring Streets, near the Town Square, was burned during the War Between the States. The new building at the present location was built in 1896.

Once renowned for its beauties, Lebanon fell off the tourist map when it disintegrated into civil war in 1975. It is now slowly recovering its infrastructure. If you're interested in the history of the region and want to see how Lebanon is striving to rebuild itself, now is a good time to visit. The handful of foreign visitors now finding their way to Lebanon are mostly well-heeled package tourists. Independent travellers are a bit of a rarity, but are made to feel welcome. The Lebanese are genuinely hospitable towards strangers and are not shy of inviting travellers into their homes. Clashes between demonstrators and the Lebanese Security Forces in Beirut on 27 May, 2004 resulted in three deaths and many injuries. Travellers are advised to stay aware and check travel advisories before travelling to the city. The border with Israel, down towards the extreme south and southeast of Lebanon, remains a highly flammable area. Long teetering on the edge of violence, this zone of tension has seen increased fighting between Hezbollah, the Lebanon-based resistance movement, and the Israeli army. Though the militants' aims do not include harassing - or killing - tourists, travellers are nonetheless advised to stay well away from these border areas, in particular the Fatima Gate and Shebaa Farms regions, where firings of missiles and mortar rounds are not uncommon.

In the wake of the first world war, which ended with the destruction of the German, Austro-Hungarian, Russian and Ottoman empires, it was possible for the victorious Allies to redraw the political map of much of the world. In Europe, Germany and Austria-Hungary, defeated in the war, re-emerged as the German, Austrian and Hungarian republics. Meanwhile, the Bolshevik revolution was already beginning to transform the Russian empire into the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. From European territories formerly German, Austro-Hungarian or Russian, new European states emerged. The overseas colonies of Germany, in Africa and elsewhere, were divided between Britain and France as mandates under licence from the newly organized League of Nations. Meanwhile, the Ottoman empire, as a result of its defeat in the war, had virtually ceased to exist. The Turkish heartlands, successfully reclaimed from Allied occupation by the Kemalist revolution, were ultimately reconstituted as the Turkish Republic; but the Arab provinces in historical Mesopotamia and Syria were irretrievably lost, and subsequently divided between Britain and France, again as mandated territory, with the provision that they must be prepared as soon as possible for independence.
