Extractions: BEACH BALL PRACTICE ACTIVITIES GRADES: 1-7 Students with disabilities often need more practice than other students to master skills. Using a "programmed" beach ball is a fun way to fit drill and practice in without boring the kids. This idea was shared with me at a math workshop I attended last summer. Blow up the beach ball and hold it with the air hole facing upward. Beach balls are already nicely sectioned (kind of like an orange). So, all you have to do next is draw lines horizontally with a permanent marking pen to create several little boxes on your beach ball. Program the boxes with various information that students need to practice (ideas follow). Some Ideas: In each box, write a number from one to nine. Throw the ball to students and ask them what numbers their thumbs are on. When they tell you, ask them to either add, subtract, multiply or divide. This is an easy activity to individualize because you can ask different students to do different things with the numbers. I also found that it helps students with mathematics vocabulary. (Some of my students always say "take away" or "times" rather than the proper vocabulary). You could even say "find the product" to further reinforce vocabulary.

Extractions: Aligning Special Education with NCLB The No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) is a standards-based reform movement. This movement emphasizes standards and the alignment of curriculum and assessment to those standards. States say what is to be taught. They write tests to determine if the materials are taught. Educational outcomes are measured. Tests scores tell if annual progress in learning is made. The goal of standards is to increase academic achievement levels. The focus is academic skill areas such as reading. A related goal is to close the achievement gap for students who have traditionally been at risk for academic failure or lack of success. This group includes children with learning disabilities (LD) and Attention-deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). What does this mean for students with LD and ADHD? Alignment of the special education curriculum with NCLB means that what is to be taught and learning goals must be clearly articulated. Classroom strategies and material taught in the classroom must align with the identified curriculum. All students need equal access to that curriculum since all but a very few students will be tested to see if they have learned the required curriculum. Areas of concern emerge for students with LD and ADHD as alignment of the curriculum with NCLB are put into place. Students with LD and ADHD have different learning strategies. Thus, a student's unique learning needs must also be carefully considered so that a student with disability has equal access to academic success. That is, a student with learning disabilities must have access to the same content areas of studies as the student without disabilities. In order to do this schools must make certain that both special education and general education teachers know different instructional strategies.
