In "Les fables de la Fontaine", ten fables from French author Jean de la Fontaine teach lessons though animal characters. In "L'arbre d'arec", we learn the origin of the Vietnamese marriage offering by reading the story of two brothers who love the same girl. In "Le Secret de la Main", a folktale from Gabon, we learn why mosquitoes buzz in people's ears. The main themes that might be explored in a curriculum unit linked to these tales are: poetry, oral storytelling, fables, and the Francophone world (history, geography, etc.). APFT Pilot Report - English - II - GEOGRAPHY AND POPULATION Up Title Contents II geography AND POPULATION. Administrative divisionsof gabon. 59 Centre Français sur la Population et le Développement. http://lucy.ukc.ac.uk/Sonja/RF/Ukpr/Report132.htm
Extractions: Among the 24 000 000 people living in the forested areas, only 3 000 000 are strictly dependent on the forest's ecosystem (this includes people living off swidden agriculture, fishing, hunting and gathering). Our research is only concerned with those populations highly dependent on the forest environment. As economic and anthropological criteria alone cannot help determine the degree of this dependence, we have chosen population density as the main indicator. There are two extreme cases : - traditional hunter-gatherers : they exploit vast areas with a density below 1 inhab./ km - agriculturists who have settled along the roads of the commercial network : they occupy and exploit a fixed and limited area with densities of 50 inhab./km Several populations are included between the two extremes. This report does not take into account the groups of over 50 inhab./km which have thus disrupted the delicate balance between population density and forest resources.

Extractions: Evaluation and prospects Libreville - Gabon 7-11 June 1999 Commission Nationale Gabonaise pour l'Unesco Agence de la Francophonie Under the patronage of the President of the Republic of Gabon Sous le Haut patronage The end of the century shows sub-Saharan Africa confronted with crucial human and social issues, like many other areas in the world. Reflection about the contribution and the role of social sciences is altogether a scientific challenge for researchers, as well as a social and political one for leaders. Social sciences can effectively contribute to understanding these issues and actually help to make a decision. The idea of having an evaluation and opening new prospects is not really a new one. However, the four reasons given below explain why this project is of paricular interest. A favourable occasion : the issues are really urgent. As social sciences are experiencing an important development in African university education, researchers are now able to have the necessary backing in time to allow objective evaluation. Consequently researchers must think about the role of social sciences in order to train and professionalize students in a satisfactory manner, and set up a scientific processing in tackling the concerns of leaders. A multidisciplinary aspect : evaluation and analysis of prospects is often carried out through a single discipline. On the contrary, here, reflection aims at linking traditional social sciences, anthropology, sociology, demography, politology, including history and human geography, communication and economy.
