Federal and state laws that apply to foster care and adoption require certain steps to be followed prior to the finalization of an adoption. It is important to have an attorney to represent you in the adoption process. Extractions: Family law cases are frequently well suited for limited representation. The best cases don't have a lot of very technical issues, but are time-intensive. Since you pay for an attorney's time, the best solution is the one that makes most effective use of that time. For example, if you know you will be waiting around the courthouse all morning for a few minutes of court time, it may not be the best use of your litigation budget to pay an attorney to wait with you. You may instead spend the attorney's time being coached on how to represent yourself most effectively, and then appear by yourself in court. That way you aren't incurring legal fees while you wait for your case to be called. The other cases that work well are those with a few issues or only one technical issue that can be split off for the attorney to handle while you do the simpler ones. What kinds of questions should I be asking?

Make no mistake about it. Legal representation can be expensive. Many people simply cannot afford the high cost of full time legal representation in family law cases. However, there is help out there. There are many parental support groups where those who have gone though it before are more than willing to help the novice. The self represented litigant should take full advantage of such resources. However, in order to make a persuasive submission to a judge, you need more than such back up support and encouragement. Family Law has become increasingly complex over the past number of years. While much of what goes on in court is highly fact dependent, "law" does have an important role to play in many cases. Yes, there is some case law on the net such as the Supreme Court of Canada and the British Columbia court data base. However, it is difficult to find exactly what you need and these data bases are by no means comprehensive with respect to family law issues. With the advent of the Federal Child Support Guidelines , now more than ever judges need some guidance as to what other judges are doing with similar situations. Until now, the self represented litigant was not able to provide that direction.

This translates into many opportunities for new lawyers to make a mark on the field of children and the law. Legal issues affecting children are emotionally charged: divorce, custody, adoption, abuse, neglect, and juvenile justice. Those who work in the field say lawyers must brace themselves, but they add that the high personal stakes involved also make good legal work especially rewarding. "Be patient. It may take a little while before you find yourself in the perfect situation," says Bruce Boyer, chair of the ABA Steering Committee on the Unmet Legal Needs of Children. Boyer also is director of the ChildLaw Clinic at Loyola University Chicago School of Law.
