It has been nearly ten years since this photo of M©rcia and me was taken: We had been married two weeks at that time after knowing each other for only four months. We were still working through some of the getting to know you phase, compounded by the cultural differences inherent in our relationship. Fortunately, I was welcomed by her wonderful family when I went to Brazil the first time for the religious wedding in year to the day later (I remember remarking to a friend on my second anniversary, "This is the first June 10th in three years that I'm not getting married!"). By the time this next photo was taken, during we made after her sister's wedding in 1998, I was just another member of her huge family. What follows is a brief and incomplete survey of these options and selected leads for finding human, online and hardcopy resources to facilitate your work search. The sooner you start, the more information you will be able to collect. VOLUNTEER WORK Ironically enough, volunteer work is often the most lucrative of the three options for working abroad because benefits including housing, food and travel may be at least partially covered by the hosting organization. Occasionally, as with the Peace Corps or certain religious organizations sending volunteers overseas, a "readjustment" payment may be given at the completion of the "tour of service". The Peace Corps payment after two years of service for instance is about $5,400. Active Peace Corps status also allows deferment or possible forgivance of certain student loans. Many a volunteer has worked in Latin America during the duration of a tourist visa in a particular country (often moving on to another volunteer position in another country when the first has expired). This is one manner in which extended travel can be made more affordable, focused and meaningful.

Even so, these figures represent only a small percentage of the total number of terrorist acts committed in Central and South America. In most Latin American countries, the primary targets of guerrillas, narcotics traffickers, and others who engage in terrorism have been domestic government and law enforcement officials, opinionmakers, and politicians. This was especially true in Colombia, Peru, and El Salvador where the levels of violence have been extremely high. In Peru, for example, of the more than 3,400 terrorist-related deaths in 1990, only six were of foreigners. Roughly two-thirds of all anti-U.S. attacks worldwide took place in Latin America, where U.S. citizens and interests were the principal foreign targets of terrorist groups. Various groups have been operating for years in Central and South America and share a radical leftist ideology that, combined with a visible U.S. presence in the region and historical antipathy toward the United States, contributes to the large number of attacks against Americans. Two Americans were killed in 1990 one in Peru and one in Panama and 31 were wounded. Chile was the most common site of anti-American attacks in Latin America. The number of anti-U.S. attacks there increased from 21 in 1989 to 61 in 1990. Most of these were bombings of Mormon Church facilities in Santiago and other parts of the country.
