That licit crop—fresh cut flowers—is a shining example of the hard work that Colombians are doing to combat the "drugs and thugs" image that so plagues their country in the international business community. By taking advantage of recently expanded trade preferences with the United States, Colombia hopes to expand its economy and to remind us all that there is still some good news about the Colombian market. Beyond the successful flower trade generated by the ATPA program, what else does the Colombian market have to offer? According to 2002 U.S. Census Bureau figures, Colombia ranks as the 29th market worldwide for United States exports, and the fourth in Latin America, after Mexico, Brazil, and Venezuela. However, with the recent economic and political upheavals throughout the continent, Colombia is by comparison more stable in political and economic terms than some of its neighbors. Because of its reputation for guerilla conflict, kidnapping, and drug trade, most American companies are not initially inclined to consider doing business in Colombia, especially firms looking for shortterm results. At the same time, many savvy global companies clearly understand the strategic potential of the country and are well established in Colombia. Despite the obvious risks, Colombia boasts a broad, rich mineral and agricultural resource base; educated, skilled workers; a legal, regulatory, business, and physical infrastructure conducive to productive business activity; a modernizing manufacturing and consumer economy; and a long history of economic growth in an essentially democratic political system.

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce and the Association of American Chambers of Commerce in Latin America (AACCLA) have long advocated free trade between the United States and the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean through the Free Trade Area of the Americas negotiations. But sparked by the spread of free-trade agreements and regional trading blocs such as the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), its pending successor the Free Trade Association of the Americas (FTAA) and Mercosur online trading, investing and speculating in Latin American stock, bond and foreign exchange markets is on a growth trajectory. The Basel, Switzerland-based Bank for International Settlements (BIS), which oversees world electronic banking payment systems and conducts regular surveys of the global foreign exchange market, estimates that approximately 80 percent of world exchange trading involves the major or "hard" currencies of G7 countries the U.S. dollar, euro, British pound, Japanese yen and Canadian and Australian dollars. Clearly, the Latin American component of this market is far from dominant, but even 20 percent of a US$1.7 trillion-per-day market translates into $340 billion worth of daily trades in other currencies. And that translates into opportunities for aspiring online foreign exchange trading service and systems providers.
