The conflict which most Americans know as The Vietnam War, also included civil wars in the neighboring nations of Laos and Cambodia. In both of these Southeast Asian countries, Communist forces overthrew the governments after long and bloody warfare. In Laos, an ethnic group known as the Hmong continued to fight against the forces of the new Communist government and its allies from Vietnam. This little-known war continues to this day. During America's long and painful time in Vietnam, the U.S. government recruited many Hmong into a secret army trained and armed by the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). Following the fall of Saigon and America's desire to forget about our unsuccessful war in Indochina, U.S. aid to the Hmong ended, and they were left to deal with the Communist Pathet Lao and North Vietnamese on their own. Pottery shards bearing the imprint of both grains and husks of rice were discovered at Non Nok Tha near Korat dating from at least 4000 B.C. The world's first domestic cultivation of rice was in Issan near today's Korat.

Tin is uncommon in the West, and before the Mesopotamians discovered it, they made bronze by mixing copper and arsenic, with brittle and sometimes hazardous results. At the 1600 B.C. level, archeologists came across another important discovery: iron spearheads, knives and bracelets. Normally the Hittites of ancient Turkey are credited with being the first people to forge iron, but these objects are just as old as anything the Hittites produced. Around the same time, the people went from dry cultivation to the wet-cultivation of rice in flooded fields that is still practiced today; that greatly increased the total food supply. The

    Extractions: For a newcomer to Laos, Dr. Evanss volume would seem an excellent introduction to its history, politics and culture. For someone like myself, who had his own intense introduction to Laos in the late 60s and looks forward to a return, the book is an insightful refresher and update. It has helped me put my own experience in context and rethink the Laos I once thought I knew. This short history is thoughtful, well-written, and largely devoid of moral judgments. The subtitle "The Land in Between" sums up an unfortunate reality for much of its history Laos has been caught between more powerful neighbors and sometimes their even more powerful patrons. But Evans does not stop with such a facile explanation of the Laos that has emerged. I particularly appreciate his continuing emphasis on the deep and enduring cultural roots of the peoples who inhabit Laos and the interplay among them.

    Extractions: This book is bascially a mid-upper division college text on the development of Modern Laos from the 1800s to the present. A fine book on the recent history of Laos, the author strives to be fair and evenhanded in placing responsibility for the various troubles plaguing the country. However, I would have liked more general background on the country, especially the history that predated European contact. Only the history necessary to explain some modern interactions is present from that period. More maps and figures would have been nice as well. Only four maps and no figures are present, and the author refers to many locations that arent listed explictly on the maps. The type is set rather close as well, making for a bit of a strain in reading. That said, the information was well laid out and seemed very well researched. I learned a great deal about the development of modern Laos.
