There is also a secular literary tradition based on themes of the Hindu epic poems, which have been transmuted into popular language. Laotians have a variety of folk arts, including weaving, basketmaking, wood and ivory carving, and silverwork and goldwork. Professional dance troupes draw upon themes from the Indian epics. Laos has four major ethno-linguistic groups. The Lao-Lum, or valley Lao, speak Laotian Tai and live in the lowlands and cities and along the Mekong River. The Lao-Lum comprise about two-thirds of the country's total population. The Lao-Tai, or tribal Tai, include the Black Tai and Red Tai (so-called in reference to the colour of their women's dress), who live throughout the country, especially at higher elevations. The Lao-Theung (Mon-Khmer) are thought to be descendants of the earliest populations of the region; they live throughout Laos and in neighbouring countries. The Lao-Soung group, including the Hmong (Meo, or Miao) and the Man (Yao), probably migrated from southern China to Laos in the late 18th century. Chinese and Vietnamese minorities generally live in the cities. About three-fifths of the population adheres to Theravada Buddhism. Animism is practiced among the Lao-Theung, and a small percentage of the population is Christian. Mahayana Buddhism and Confucianism are observed by Chinese and Vietnamese minorities. Lao is the official language; English, Vietnamese, and French are spoken by the elite in cities.

Though shoes can be worn in temple compounds, they should be removed before entering the chapel of the principal Buddha image. Buddhist monks are not allowed to touch or be touched by a woman, or accept anything from a woman's hand. Social The Lao people greet each other with a prayer-like gesture called a nop. A younger person or a person of lower status will nop their elder or better. The western custom of shaking hands has become more common in recent years - though a smile and a slight bow of the head is still considered polite. Backslapping, public displays of affection, shouting, and wild gesticulation are all considered impolite. The head is considered the highest part of the body, while the feet are considered the lowest, both literally and figuratively. Touching someone's head or pointing at people or things with the feet are, therefore, considered extremely rude. As with entering temples, shoes are removed before entering somebody's home.

The lack of a national government infrastructure and effective transportation networks has also contributed to the relative independence and autonomy of most villages. Residence in a village thus has been an important aspect of social identity, particularly for lowland Lao ethnic groups. For many upland ethnic groups, clan membership is a more important point of social identification. For all groups, the village community has a kinship nexus, although structures differ. Rice is the staple food for all Laotians, and most families and villages are able to produce enough or nearly enough each year for their own consumption. Laos is ethnically diverse; the population includes more than forty ethnic groups, which are classified within three general families of Lao Sung (upland Lao), Lao Theung (midland Lao), and Lao Loum (lowland Lao). The country is officially a multiethnic nation, with Lao as the official language, but relationships among the different groups have sometimes been characterized by misunderstandings and competition over natural resources. The different ethnic groups have substantially different residential patterns, agricultural practices, forms of village governance, and religious beliefs. Only the national capital of Vientiane and a few other provincial capitals can be considered urban. These small cities are market and administrative centers that attract trading and communications activity, but they have developed very little manufacturing or industrial capacity. Daily and seasonal life in all sectors of the society is affected by the monsoon. Rice production determines periods of heavy and slack work, which are mirrored in school vacations, religious festivals, and government activity.

Every Lao Buddhist male is expected to become a monk for a short period of his life, usually between school and starting a career or getting married. The main non-Buddhist 'religion' is phii worship, a spirit cult which is officially banned. Hmong/Mien tribes practise animism and ancestral worship, and some follow a Christian version of the cargo cult, believing Jesus Christ will arrive in a jeep, dressed in combat fatigues. A small number of Lao - mostly the French-educated elite - are Christians. The official language of Laos is Lao, as spoken and written in Vientiane. As an official language, it has successfully become the lingua franca between all Lao and non-Lao ethnic groups in Laos. There are five main dialects in the country, each of which can be divided into further subdialects. All Lao dialects are closely related to the languages spoken in Thailand, northern Myanmar and pockets of China's Yunnan Province. Traditional culture in Laos has been heavily influenced by various strains of Khmer, Vietnamese and Thai cultures. The lowland Lao share the same ancestry as many Thai tribes, so the similarities between Lao and Thai culture are especially strong. This can be seen in Lao sculpture, classical music, dance-dramas and cuisine. Lao folk music is more indigenous, based around the khaen (a double row of bamboo reeds fitted into a hardwood sound box). Folk music is often accompanied by dancing or bawdy theatre. The focus of most traditional art has been primarily religious and includes wats (temples), stupas and several distinctively Lao representations of Buddha. The Lao remain skilful carvers and weavers, but traditional silversmithing and goldsmithing are declining arts.

In 1955 it was admitted to the United Nations. However, the main source of political strife has been the struggle for and against Communism, intensified and complicated by the participation from outsiders. In fact, Laotian coalition government made of neutralist, communist and pro-Western factions was formed in June 1962. But, Prince Souvanna Phouma failed to get contentious factions to cooperate. The country has been plagued by political assassinations, coups after coups until 1973, when another coalition government was formed. After a lengthy period of political instability, the Kingdom of Laos was politically, economically and socially transformed. The Lao People's Revolutionary Party took over the country and changed its name into the Lao People's Democratic Republic in December 1975.

Extractions: Despite the growing need for flexible overviews of this part of the world, and, taking into account that the editor is an accomplished writer, this volume does not fill the need for even an undergraduate readership (let alone tourists!). Its poorly compiled and suffers from what must have been "old buddies" wanting in. A case in point is Trankells paper. Ive read it through twice and although Ive spent two years of field work in the area (Trankell claims to have spent two weeks) I cant recognize any of the "data" she draws on to support point that escapes any sound mind. His paper is not the only bad one, but it does reflect badly on the entire composition of the volume.
