Extractions: Mike's Homepage My name is Mike Berhorst and I am a high school English/Yearbook teacher, FCA advisor, class advisor, cross country coach, and track coach. This is my fourth year teaching English and my second year with the yearbook class. I am in the middle of the administrative credential program and will finish in December 2003. My favorite way to stay in shape is participating in triathlons. Below are Scott and me after our first tri. My last triathlon was in August at the Sandman Triathlon in Santa Cruz.. My hobbies include working on my Ramcharger, lifting, and various home projects. I believe in the doctrine of Russell Irwin which is "work smarter, not harder." If you would like to learn some tips on how to do this in the profession of teaching, please email me. I have a lot of ideas and would like to learn more. This is me in the kitchen with Brewster. Above are Scott Ferreira and me after our first triathlon in October 2001. Scott took first in our age division and I brought home the bronze. Less than a month after this photo I hurt my left rotator cuff and had to take 11 months off from lifting. Since I started again, I'm back to full training and hope to compete in a couple Olympic distance triathlons this summer. The course for the Sandman was a 1/2 mile ocean swim which went around the cement ship and then towards Moss Landing, and then back to the shore. The bike ride was only 15 miles but the first 5 were uphill. The triathlon finished with a 4.2 mile beach run which went from beyond the ship, through New Brighton campground, back down the cliff and back to the starting line. It was tough, but so much fun. Thanks dad for allowing that race to happen for me. (picture on its way, check back soon.)

Submit a lesson plan or student art work for Social Studies Seeing and experiencing art is a powerful tool for considering the role of language and communication in the classroom. Contemporary artists use visual art as a language to tell stories that are both personal and universal. Often equally engaged in the process of writing as they are in painting, drawing, or sculpting, contemporary artists are inspired by both visual and literary sources. The work of contemporary artists can be used to enhance skills in visual and oral literacy, self-expression, problem solving, writing, and critical thinking.

The peak years were between 1050 and 1350, and many of the hundreds of castles constructed during that time still stand today. After reviewing with students that in the unstable and war-torn years of the Middle Ages, castles were designed as fortresses. Feudal kings gave parcels of land to loyal noblemen, who in turn were expected to defend that territory. Castles offered shelter to the lords and their households, provided protection in time of war, and served as bases from which the lord's soldiers could launch battles or terrorize the people on a hostile lord's estate. Students study the function and parts of a castle such as the moat, drawing bridge, outer curtain wall, main castle, portcullis, and the keep. Then in groups the students
