This rugged wildland stretches from Wyoming high deserts, where herds of antelope play along the lake shore, to the forested slopes of Utah's Uinta Mountains. A diverse land of scenic beauty, Flaming Gorge lends itself to many memorable outdoor adventures. In 1869, Major John Wesley Powell, on expedition down the Green River, looked in awe at this magnificent country and named it Flaming Gorge. Today the brilliant red cliffs are scenic attractions for thousands of visitors annually. The heart of the National Recreation Area is a 91-mile-long reservoir, created by the Flaming Gorge Dam. With over 300 miles of shoreline, boat ramps, full service lodges and marinas, Lake Flaming Gorge is an aquatic paradise. While motor boating, sailing, swimming, windsurfing, water skiing, and scuba diving are among the lake's popular recreation activities, "The Gorge" is most famous for its fishing.

Recreational Activities At National Trust Properties: Parakarting Etc recreational activities AT NATIONAL TRUST PROPERTIES GUIDING PRINCIPLES AND GOOD PRACTICE. Parakarting, land sailing, Kite Buggying, Power Kiting, Kite Jumping http://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/environment/html/peo_com/papers/recreat01_27.htm
Extractions: Parakarting, Land Sailing, Kite Buggying, Power Kiting, Kite Jumping, Kite Boarding and Kite Surfing All these activities require a large flat expanse such as a sandy beach, short grass, tarmac, or open water. As they are relatively new activities, their use has so far been fairly unregulated. The Trust has only a few sites that meet the requirements for these activities and therefore the use of National Trust properties is not great or widespread. Guiding principles 1. The National Trust recognises the pleasure that these activities bring. However, these activities on Trust land can compromise conservation objectives and the enjoyment of properties by others. 2. When these activities are likely to have an adverse impact on wildlife, especially birds and livestock then they should be relocated and/or rescheduled to minimise such impacts.

Extractions: Sailing Sailing is an appropriate activity with little environmental impact. There is little sailing on National Trust-owned inland waters, but on coastal waters adjoining Trust land it is considerable. Where there is pressure for more access to such waters, the Trust should consider these needs carefully.

According to the 2000 census, Fairfield County has a population of 23,454 and Winnsboro has a population of 3,475. Taxes in Fairfield County are very favorable for business, industry and individuals as we enjoy one of the lowest per capita total tax rates in the nation. Average travel distances from anywhere in the county are approximately: 45 minutes to downtown Columbia, 30 minutes to Columbia, 25 minutes to Lugoff or Camden, 50 minutes to Charlotte. Situated between the Broad River on the west and the Wateree River (now Lake Wateree) on the east, the area was a primary hunting ground for the Cherokee and the Catawba Indians. The first white settlers came to this area in the early 1740s. Other settlers came in the middle of the 18th century. They were primarily Scotch-Irish, but also included German, English, and French Huguenots. "Wynnsborough," named after Colonel Richard Winn, was settled in 1775. It was the location of British Headquarters under Lord Cornwallis in 1780. According to the legend, it was Cornwallis who gave Fairfield County its name. As Cornwallis looked over the countryside, he often remarked, "What fair fields." Wynnsborough was chartered in 1785 and made the seat of justice for the Fairfield District. The name of the town was changed to Winnsboro and incorporated in 1832.
