Extractions: Abbasid (Baghdad) Caliphate . The Abbasids ruled the Middle East from Baghdad from 750 to 1258. They were Sunni Arabs descended from Muhammad's uncle Abbas. The greatest of the caliphs were Harun al Rashid (786-809) and Mamun (813-33). After Mamun, civil wars, tax-farming and corruption lost the dynasty the support of religious teachers and devout Muslims, and the rule of the caliphs effectively ended in 946, when a Persian general deposed and replaced the caliph. From then on, the caliphate was a formality, while genuine temporal power was held by regional emirs. The centralised might and grandeur of the Abbasid period dwindled slowly, buoyed up by the centrality and wealth of Baghdad. It was the Mongols who felled the last caliph and destroyed Baghdad in 1258. Achaeans (Aeolians). These were a people small in number but big in impact, overwhelming indigenous populations. They moved into Greece around -1850 to -1600 with the Ionians, supplanting themselves upon the peasant culture. This led to the Mycenaean epoch (-1600 to -1150). The Mycenaeans felled the Cretan Minoans. They had a slave culture and large fortress palaces. This culture was supplanted by the iron-using Dorian invasions of -1200 to -1000 from the Balkans. Ahriman , or Angra Mainyu , was a deity of the Avesta or Zoroastran teachings from around -1000 in Persia. Angra Mainyu opposed Ahura Mazda, the Wise Lord or God. Zoroastrans were encouraged to choose between them, and Earth was looked on as a theatre of war for the eventual overthrow of Ahriman. This Persian metaphysical viewpoint was suppressed under Islam, yet it resurfaced in the Iranian forms of Islamic Shi'ism. Rudolf Steiner later distinguished between Ahriman and Satan, ascribing to Ahriman the power of induction of sleep (loss of awareness) and to Satan the power of evil.

Extractions: Introduction This paper, a series of notes on a work in progress, arose out of research engaged in at Emory University during January - May 2001 into a project called Home, tentatively subtitled "a contemporary art exhibition for South Africa with artists from the South Asian Diaspora". The paper sketched out my reasoning for the project, some of the historical and intellectual material I gleaned while at Emory, and changes I have made to the concept after interacting with this material. Following a research trip to the West and East Coasts of the US and to Toronto and the Caribbean I hope to locate additional artists and material for the show.

Extractions: VOL. 5, NO: 21 Despite official denial, reports emanating from New Delhi suggest that the Centre has established dialogue with the Hurriat leadership. As a matter of political principle any dialogue between the government and a section of its citizenry to address the aberrations of democratic governance is a welcome development. But then whom and what does the Hurriat leadership represent. "Representative Character" has been thrust upon Hurriat by the countries waging proxy-war against India to keep the pot boiling in Kashmir. Only the other day a leading national daily brought out the details establishing its mercenary character. Hurriats politics has nothing to do with the aspirations of Kashmiris. The bitter legacy this politics has left behind is political subversion, annihilation of any semblance of religious pluralism, violent mayhems, brutalization of society and denial of freedom of speech and political choice. The Hurriat leadership in also obsessed with pursuing the politics of personal aggrandisement. Mr Abdul Gani Lonethe Hurriat leader has spoken about a negotiated settlement. He also has demanded dialogue with the dissatisfied group. No sovereign nation can ever acquiesce to a settlement which leads to the dilution of sovereignty over its integral part. Autonomy or independence both are the variants of the same process.

Mr. Speaker, I rise tonight to lead a Special Order that we expect will involve a number of our colleagues who just returned last evening, as I did, from a whirlwind 5-day trip around the world to try to deal with the issue of, not just the terrorism that occurred on September 11, but to improve and change our relations with Russia. Mr. Speaker, this trip was not scheduled after September 11, but rather had been scheduled in August, when our Russian friends contacted me and asked me to bring over some ideas that I had to improve the relationship between our two countries and to give them some of the ideas I was working on as the basis for the upcoming Bush-Putin summit and to change direction in our relationship. The preparation of a document entitled ``A New Time, a New Beginning'' was, in fact, the subject of that presentation; and the delegation that traveled with me that I had the pleasure of chairing, along with the gentleman from Texas (Mr.
