World Civilizations The Reader's Companion to American History Among the wars of the United States the Korean conflict was the last to utilize conventional strategies, tactics, and weapons. Simultaneously it was the first limited, inconclusive conflict to mix the antagonists of the cold war in the cauldron of a civil war. Until the mid-1960s, most American interpretations of the United States' entry into the war supported the Truman administration's position that the United States had become involved because its honor and credibility were at stake, it felt compelled to contain the Moscow-directed global expansion of communism, and it saw tolerance of North Korean aggression as Munich-like appeasement. But the Vietnam War brought challenges to established views on American foreign and defense affairs, including the Korean War. Most revisionists blamed America and South Korea for precipitating hostilities, argued that the conflict was basically a civil war, and charged that ethnocentrism and economic imperialism had influenced American policymakers on Asia. War erupted in Korea on June 25, 1950, along the thirty-eighth parallel that separated North and South Korea. As North Korean units pushed deep into South Korea, the U.N. Security Council, at the instigation of the United States, condemned the North Korean invasion and later called on members to assist South Korea. That first week, President Harry S. Truman, without seeking congressional approval, committed American forces to the conflict. On July 7, the U.N. Command was established, with General of the Army Douglas MacArthur appointed as its head. The nearest U.S. forces were already under his Far East Command, including in Japan alone four army divisions, the Fifth Air Force, and units of the Seventh Fleet. Eventually nearly 1.8 million Americans would serve in Korea, of whom 54,200 were killed, 103,300 wounded, and 8,200 missing in action. World Civilizations The Great American History Fact-Finder , conflict pitting South Korea and U.N. forces against North Korea and later the People's Republic of China. The war began when the North Korean Communist army crossed the thirty-eighth parallel on June 25, 1950, invading the Republic of South Korea. The United Nations Security Council, declaring North Korea an aggressor, sent troops to counter the invasion. Gen. Douglas MacArthur led the forces until 1951 when President Harry S. Truman removed him from command for repeated insubordination and replaced him with Gen. Matthew Ridgway. Sixteen nations sent troops and forty-one countries sent food and supplies, but the United States was the largest contributor of arms, troops, and equipment. After pushing the North Korean troops back above the thirty-eighth parallel, MacArthur pursued them into the North, which resulted in the intervention of Chinese troops. The war reached a stalemate in June 1951, and after two years of negotiations an armistice was signed July 27, 1953, with the thirty-eighth parallel designated as the border between North and South Korea.

It left Korea, North and South, with several million dead and the UN forces involved in the fighting with over 100,000 casualties. But despite fighting as intense and as violent as any other conflict since World War Two, Korea has always been history's 'Forgotten War'. While atrocities conducted both by North and South Korean forces have already been documented, recently a much darker side to the US involvement in the Korean War has begun to emerge. During the world war of 1939-45, the future of the Japanese empire was decided at Allied summit meetings. In the short term, pending the return of Korean independence, Korea, a Japanese colony since 1910, was to be occupied north of the 38th parallel by Soviet Russia. To the south, a United States military administration under the direction of General Douglas MacArthur would control the area from its headquarters in Tokyo. In the North, the Soviets backed a Stalinist regime under their client Kim Il-sung and created the North Korean Peoples' Army, equipped with Russian tanks and artillery. In the South, the chaotic political situation resulted in an American-backed administration under the presidency of Syngman Rhee, whose openly declared aim was the imposition of national unity by force. As a result of this stance, the American-trained South Korean army was limited to a lightly armed gendarmerie, lacking tanks, combat aircraft and all but a small amount of field artillery.

Truman ordered that the armed forces were to desegregate at the beginning of the Korean War, most branches save for the infant U.S. Air Force still had segregated units. For most of the soldiers who were black, that meant that they were to go through basic training in a segregated environment from the beginning: When I went to basic training, the Drill Sergeants said, "white troops over here, Black troops over there, and what are you guys?" Historians also used official papers from the archives of the Soviet Union and the People's Republic of China. These included some five hundred previously secret diplomatic messages given by the Russian government to South Korea in 1994. Many historical investigators also conducted interviews with participants from China and the Soviet Union. On August 6, 1945, the first A-bomb was dropped on Hiroshima. More than 80,000 Japanese civilians were killed in one blast. Two days later, on August 8, the USSR declared war on Japan. Over one and half million Russian soldiers and 5,500 tanks and artillery invaded Manchuria and reached the Korean border in less than two weeks. Soviet marines occupied Manchuria and the Chinese 8th Army took over villages and small towns. Chiang's KMT troops took over large cities in Manchuria from the Soviets as part of an agreement between Stalin and Chiang Kai Shek. Chiang's troops and US soldiers provided safe havens to Japanese civilians. bodyOffer(5722) On August 9, 1945 the second A-bomb was dropped on Nagasaki. Japanese authorities in Korea began to transfer power to Korean leaders. On Aug. 10 and 11 Colonel Charles H. Bonesteel and Lt. Colonel Dean Rusk formulated General Order No. 1. James Bymes (US Secretary of State) instructed the colonels to draw up a borderline as far north as possible. The colonels were unable to find a good map of Korea and used a small wall map of the Far East. Lt. Col. Rusk found the 38th parallel on the tiny map. A young junior officer determined the fate of the Korean people. Stalin accepted the 38th parallel and ordered all Russian units already in S Korea to pull back north of the 38th.
