Extractions: This course is designed to introduce you to the culture, history, and social practices of Korea. For the last half-century the Korean peninsula has been at the vortex of regional and global power conflicts. Little is known, however, about Korea's ancient traditions, unique culture, or important contributions to East Asian and global civilization. This course introduces the Korean people, their historical past, language and literary production, contributions of East Asian intellectual traditions, and its fascinating contemporary history as a divided nation-product of the mid-twentieth century Cold War. We will also have to examine the remarkable rise of South Korea as an important Asian trading economy and its role in reshaping balance of power in East Asia. Of course the current Nuclear Crisis involving North Korea will be discussed. The course will use literature, film, historical writing, and contemporary popular cultural artifacts to explore this vibrant and fascinating culture. Course requirements are two, hour examinations and a final exam.
Extractions: Baffling Links with Ancient India Anand Sharma T he archaeological remains of ancient Maya civilization of Mexico are lying scattered in the parts of Yucatan, Campeche, Tabasco and eastern half of Chiapas as well as in the territory of Quintana Roo of the republic of Mexico. Covering an area of about 125,000 square miles, its traces are to be found in the western section of Honduras Republic, Peten and adjacent highlands of Guatemala and practically in the whole of Honduras. Admiral Christopher Columbus mistakenly called the New World inhabitants as Indians. Although he corrected himself subsequently, the natives of Americas continued to be called 'Indians'. During the course of his third journey, Columbus came into contact with 'Maya' people. The possibility of links of these people with Old World civilizations and particularly with ancient India is not acceptable to many historians. However, there are those who hold a different view. Eminent scholar-writers like Mackenzie, Hewitt, Tod, Pococke and Mrs. Nuttal have collected plenty of data to show that ancient American civilizations were influenced by Old World civilizations. We have to remember that the post-Columbus history of America for 300 years was the story of ruthless destruction and fanatics like Bishop Diego da Landa burnt a huge bonfire of valuable documents and nothing but the three codices of 'Chilam Balam' could survive the holocaust. There are two specific archaeological discoveries pertaining to 761 AD, about which most Mexican historians are silent, that attract our attention as possible links of Maya civilization to ancient India. The first one is a wall panel (Panel No. 3 of Temple 0-13, at Piedras Negras, Guatemala; reproduced as Plate 69, page 343 of 'The Ancient Maya' by S.G. Morley) belonging to the Later Classic Stage of Mexican history, associated with the peaking of Maya architecture and sculpture. Mexican historians have not given any interpretation of this panel. It appears that the scene depicted in the panel relates to the great Indian epic '

Korea is currently awaiting the final decision by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) regarding adding the dolmens to its World Heritage List. The dolmens are a source of interest in Korea and active studies on them are underway to ensure their preservation. The historical significance of the prehistoric relics also makes them attractive tourist destinations. When the Ice Age ended about 10,000 years ago, earth underwent many changes and the natural environment became similar to that of today. In the process of adapting to the environmental changes, people started to take up a new lifestyle: they began to farm and raise animals. This development took place on the Korean Peninsula about 6,000 B.C., around the Neolithic or New Stone Age. The main tools of daily life during that era were made of stone or clay. By 1,000 B.C., people began to use more developed tools to farm and raise livestock, which were completely different from those of the earlier period. The tools were mostly bronze daggers, spears and axes made from compounds of copper and tin. Compared to the Stone Age, the changes in the Bronze Age went beyond the use of different materials and the refinement of tools. Instead, they were so radical as to be comparable to today's Internet and digital revolution or the industrial revolution of the 19th century.

Extractions: November 03, 2003 From la Repubblica (our translation and paraphrase): Seventy royal tombs underground stone structures, 20 with splendid Buddhist frescoes of the 5th to 7th centuries around the North Korean capital of Pyongyang are at risk of disappearing. . . That is the alarm sounded in an interview by Ansa journalist Roberto Maggi with Ikuo Hirayama, rector of the Tokyo State School of Fine Arts and Music one of the most celebrated contemporary Japanese painters, and unexcelled master of depictions of the ancient Silk Road, for which he has been named a traveling ambassador for Unesco. . . Hirayama has recently visited the 70 tombs, which belong to the last period of the Koguryo dynasty one of the three, with Shilla and Paechke, that flourished from 34 BC to the end of the 7th century AD in Manchuria and north and central Korea, building an advanced civilization and military power capable of prolonged struggle with the imperial China of the Han and Tang. "They are tombs of great importance for the Buddhist culture of the Far East, and also a key to understanding the history of the ancient emperors of Japan. The celebrated Takamatsu tomb of Asuka, for example, resembles the Koguryo tombs. Around 20 of these tombs, and ten in particular, preserve wonderful frescoes of dancers, warriors, birds, fish, dragons, noblewomen and girls of the court, forest animals, clouds and winds, in dazzling colors and in a lively, realistic style". . . According to Hirayama, North Korea is committing itself to the preservation of the tombs. "But the lack of capital and technical knowledge is a serious handicap . . . some tombs were abandoned and almost all were used during the Korean War to hold captured American soldiers."

Korea And The Cycle Of Human Civilization 1) The Cycle of Civilization Zones and the Task Confronting Humanity If we look back over the history of human civilization, we come to realize that the ancient civilizations all began as tropical civilizations. In other words, the birthplaces of the ancient civilizations were tropical regions. The Mayan, Incan, Egyptian, Mesopotamian, Indian, and China's Yellow River civilizations were all ancient civilizations whose birthplaces were the tropics or subtropics. Subsequently, these civilizations moved; but if we ask where they moved, we have to say that they moved into the region of cool-zone civilizations. Our present 20th century civilization undoubtedly belongs among the cool-zone civilizations. If this is true, how did civilizations begin in the tropics and then move into the cool-zones? If we look at the providence of nature, we can see that spring, summer, autumn, and winter follow one another in order, and even if we look at a single day we can see that it is divided into morning, daytime, evening, and night. If human civilization, therefore, should also have begun as a morning civilization (spring civilization) and then become a daytime civilization (summer civilization), then an evening civilization (autumn civilization), and then a nighttime civilization (winter civilization), why did it begin as a tropical civilization of the summer and daytime and then move into the autumn season of the cool-zone civilizations?

Ancient Indian Architecture and Civil Construction was known in ancient India as prove the existence of large urban civilizations in the Thailand, Burma as also to China, korea and Japan. http://www.crystalinks.com/indiarchitecture.html
Extractions: This is a granite temple panel - one of many that show the splendor of Indian temple architecture. The Science of Architecture and Civil Construction was known in Ancient India as Sthapatya-Shastra . The word Sthapatya is derived from the root word Sthapana i.e. 'to establish'. The technique of architecture was both a science and an art, hence it is also known as Sthapatya-kala, the word Kala means an art. From very early times the construction of temples, palaces, rest houses and other civil construction was undertaken by professional architects known as Sthapati. Even during the Vedic times, there existed professionals who specialized in the technique of constructing chariots and other heavy instruments of war. These professionals have been referred to in the Rig Veda as Rathakara which literally means 'chariot maker'. The excavations of the ruins at Mohenjodaro and Harrappa (today in Pakistan) proved the existence of a developed Urban civilization in India. The Indus valley civilization is dated around 3000 B.C. Thus since the last 5000 years. India has had an urban civilization. The existence of an urban civilization presumes the existence of well developed techniques of architecture and construction. These techniques would no doubt have had been systematically stated in record books for transmitting them to the later generations as well for being used as reference media for actual construction. Unfortunately, as far as the Indus Valley civilization goes no such records have been preserved either as rock edicts, manuscripts, etc., or in folk tales and legends.
