To tell you the truth, one of my Korean acquaintance once told me exactly the same thing. I was infuriated deep inside, though I dared not say the above insult to this Korean man. But I got the same feeling and wanted to swear at him. Even now, many Koreans believe that Yi Sun-shin made the steel boats for the first time in the world history. In his birthplace, the people built a stone monument for the prominent admiral, and consider him to be a guardian angel for the country of the Koreans. Some people even regard his birthplace as a sacred precinct. When the Korean guy told me the above line, I was much younger and somewhat hot-tempered. It has been quite a while since that day. I can now think of the whole matter rather calmly. In any case, the above a-colony-or-not-a-colony dispute has something to do with the racial matters. When you look back in history, you will know for sure that there have been a myriad of racial conflicts and problems over seemingly trifle matters, though such matters seem quite important to the parties concerned.

Crushed in a vise between more powerful dynasties in southern Korea and northeastern China, Goguryeo fell into the dust of history in 668 A.D. Today, however, it is suddenly emerging as far more than a historical footnote.

Extractions: Jinshuron (Who are the Japanese?) debates mostly rested on rehashing myths and legends gleaned from the ancient texts of the Kojiki and Nihonshoki . However, when Torii's letters from the field came filtering in monthly from exotic corners of the Asian continent, that reported on the finds of shell-mounds, stone-tools, dolmens, and kofun remains, all "similar" to that of Japan, such news were eagerly anticipated by the members of the Tokyo Anthropological Society. This paper is devoted to introducing, describing, and analyzing the earliest field reports, photographs of ethnographic peoples, and material collections of prehistoric artifacts and burials that were published in the issues of the Tokyo Anthropological Society dating from 1890's - 1910's. I will especially focus on how the opening up of the Asian continent to Japanese fieldwork and the 1910 annexation of Korea permitted the first systematic art and archaeological surveys, excavations, and analysis of prehistoric pottery, settlement patterns, and burial classifications which to this day have served as the most important chronological framework for cross-dating Japan's ancient remains.

I think I could speak for all Americans when I say that we would object, perhaps even with violence, if another nation like Iraq or even North Korea insisted that we allowed United Nations inspectors into our innermost weapons manufacturing processes. Worse, Americans would consider it an outright act of war if United Nations inspectors started nosing around OUR military facilities, especially inspectors from nations we consider hostile. In fact, if you get right down to it, whoÕs calling the kettle black? The United States is furious that Iraq may have a nuclear /biological /chemical weapons program, when the truth is that the United States has the largest by far of any nuclear /chemical weapons program and capability, and there is a strong possibility that we have a secret biological weapons program, as well. Iraq is under the leadership of a very intelligent dictator who not only survived a global effort to overthrow him by military force, but is a world-class player in the political scheming arena and if you ask me, heÕll survive this latest chest beating by the United States. In that regard, Saddam Hussein cannot be bested or removed from power, and he wins the chess match of global politics and the intrigue within his own fold.
