Extractions: Since 1996 in Placer County there have been 5 unintentional firearms injuries to children under 16, and one death. Each of these incidents was preventable. We need your help - one injury or death is too many ! Even if you do not have a gun in your home, there are guns in about half of all American homes. The chances are very good that at some point your child will visit a home where firearms are present. The Placer County Health and Human Services Department and the Placer County Sheriff's Office provide this gun safety information to protect your children - and all children in our community - from tragic injury or death by unintentional shootings. In most cases, if you keep any loaded firearm within any premise which is under your custody or control and know or reasonably should know that a child (person under 18 years of age) is likely to gain access to the firearm, you may be guilty of a felony if a child gains access to that firearm and thereby causes death or injury to any person unless the firearm was in a secure locked container or locked with a locking device that rendered it inoperable.
