The Next Great Exodus The question is will the indigenous population absorb it, and the changes to life When will people start saying enough? on 03/28/2002 82603 AM PST by katana. http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/news/655181/posts
Extractions: The world is in a convulsion of mass emigration. Europe, for the moment, is the prime target. Waves of people seeking a better economic future are coming north from Africa, west from Central Asia, or even just making the comparatively short hop from the other side of what used to be the Iron Curtain. A substantial proportion of them end up on this already cramped and crowded island. Many are refused permanent admission, on the grounds that they have entered illegally and are not fleeing persecution. However, the government is lax about expelling them. Of the 150,000 such cases who have arrived in little over the last year, 120,000 who were deemed to have no right to be here are still to board the plane home. Thus, by stealth, a mass immigration is well under way. The question is: will the indigenous population absorb it, and the changes to life and culture it will bring; or will the British, too, start to get on the move? Nor is the potential exodus confined to white-collar workers. My builder, who routinely works six or seven days a week so that he can take his wife to Australia for six weeks in the winter, now so despairs of this country that he is looking to buy in Brittany. Infected by this pessimism and wanderlust, I can begin to imagine having a permanent home outside England. I suspect that I would have to be in the sort of horrible predicament faced by the white farmers of Zimbabwe before I actually tried to persuade my wife that we ought to go. Many others seem to need far less persuasion.

Extractions: Thank you, Mr. Vice President. Thank you for those kind words. I'm honored by your presence here especially during duck-hunting season. And, as a citizen, I want to thank you not only for your leadership and wisdom during these extraordinary times, but for your courage: If Hamlet had borne half the slings-and-arrows you have, Mr. Vice President, it would've been a very short play. Hearing my checkered past recalled, I'm struck by how many places I have fled: Canada, the Democratic Party, and psychiatry. A trifecta of sorts. The reason I'm here, ladies and gentlemen, is that I have nowhere left to go. I want to thank Chris Demuth, Jim Wilson and the AEI Council of Academic Advisors for thinking otherwise, and bestowing on me this great honor particularly one that carries the name of my dear and revered friend, Irving Kristol. Unipolarity Americans have an healthy aversion to foreign policy. It stems from a sense of thrift: Who needs it? We're protected by two great oceans, we have this continent practically to ourselves and we share it with just two neighbors, both friendly, one so friendly that its people seem intent upon moving in with us.

Extractions: This list includes links to websites made by Nigerians, on Nigeria and on Nigerians. I'm collecting this link list mainly because of my own interest. Still I hope it finds some other users too. One target group I hope find this list useful are people like me: those who want to know the country, maybe visit it. Also I hope the Nigerian children and other Nigerians in diaspora could use this to stay in contact with their homeland. As I am studying media studies, I have included some links to pages that have material I don't quite agree with. This is for the purpose to not only know about Nigeria but also to study the image Nigeria has in the net. So please bear in mind that some pages tell more about their author than about their topic. Note that I use the Finnish system in dates: dd.mm.yy. For example 1.3.99 means first of march. Send your suggestions and comments to rkorpela@levi.urova.fi . Thank you for visiting. Extractions: Member posted 05-27-2003 08:04 AM Hey everyone. You guys probably get this all the time, but I'd like to hear your opinions on what martial art would be best-suited to me. But first, some background info. I'm 21. About five months ago I decided I was interested in doing Kendo. Up until now, I had no experience with martial arts whatsoever, but I was interested in Japanese culture, and interested in Japanese swords, and I decided that I would like to learn how to wield them properly. On a whim I did an internet search for 'Kendo +"South Africa'", and amazingly, I found a school right here in my town, one of only two in this country. I called the guy up, and the next day I started training there. I've doing Kendo ever since. It's a very small school, with (at current count) two instructors and four students. Truth be told, I'm not all that atheletic, but fairly I'm patient, and while I still suck at Kendo, my instructors tell me that I suck a lot less than I did when I started five months ago Anyway, a couple of weeks ago something happened that made me rethink my attitude towards martial arts. A friend of mine was out clubbing with some friends, and there was another group of guys there. Apparently there was tension between the two groups the whole night - you know, they were probably hitting on the same girls or something, the usual stuff. Anyway, after my friend left he went to go get a bite to eat. Sitting there, he saw two of the guys from the other group come in and look around. (Apparently, they were each about twice his size.) They saw him, and started advancing towards him purposefuly. My friend pulled out his wallet, threw some money on the table and ran outside, hoping to get to his bike and escape, but the other guys ran outside and blocked his exit.

Arnis, Escrima, and Kali are all terms for the native fighting arts of the Philippines, specifically the arts that use weapons. European sword fighting, mostly Spanish , with some evidence of Italian and possibly other European countries influenced native fighting styles when mercenaries fought (and possibly taught) there . The most popular legend concerning the Filipino arts is that Datu (Chief) Lapu Lapu killed the Spanish explorer Ferdinand Magellan in personal combat. Arnis, whose name is derived from the Spanish expression "Arnis de mano (harness the hand)" is from the northern parts of Luzon Island , Escrima is from the central Philippines , such as Cebu City , and Kali is from the southern island of Mindanao Some claim that, since Mindanao was never conquered by the Spanish to the extent that the rest of the Philippines was, Kali (the older of the three) more closely resembles the original pre-Spanish arts of the area, and is more complete

Masks became and still become the attribute of a dressed up dancer who gave it life and word at the time of ceremonies. The sculptor begins by cutting a piece of wood and leaving it to dry in the sun; if it cracks, it cannot be used for a mask. African sculptors see wood as a complex living material and believe each piece can add its own feature to their work. Having made certain the wood is suitable, the sculptor begins, using an azde to carve the main features, a chisel to work on details and a rough leaf to sand the piece.
