Extractions: Last update December 4, 2000 Next update December 11, 2000 evening Karate not yet accepted for Olympic competition Dear Editor: With reference to your article published Nov. 5 "Karate guru kicks it up in North Vancouver," I would like to clarify the following points: Contrary to Mr. Salmani's statement that "Shotokan karate is the martial art form accepted for competition in the Olympics" to date no style of karate has ever been accepted as an Olympic sport. There are four major styles of karate, Wado-Ryu, Shito-Ryu, Goju-Ryu and Shotokan under the umbrella of the WKF ( World Karate Federation ). The WKF is working with the IOC to make karate an Olympic sport, or at least a demonstration sport in the future. The B.C. provincial karate team is selected by a highly organized and structured system created and administered by Karate BC. Karate BC is the strongest karate organization in Canada which for many years has made B.C. one of Canada's top karate teams. I appreciate Mr. Salmani's comment about making the B.C. team number one, and should Mr. Salmani become a member of Karate BC and follow the correct procedures, it may be possible that he could, at some time in the future, contribute to our already highly successful program.
