The Olympic Dilemma and as you know, traditional karate are well spread in europe and they say thisgive karate an edge to be selected as the next official olympic sports. http://www.martialartsplanet.com/archive/t-9425.html
Extractions: Martial Arts Planet Styles Karate View Full Version : The Olympic Dilemma Dirk Dagger I have been competing for a few years right now and it really saddens me that I don't see Karatedo in the Olympics. If you compare Competition TKD and Competition Karate, I can see that TKD is more brutal than Karate. The competitors hit their opponents in full contact and a knockout is considered as a win. In my tournament experience here in the Philippines, I see more of my TKD friends get more injured than me or any of my Karate buddies. The only difference is that Sports TKD wears protective gear and in Karate all there is, is a mouth guard and a glove. So why is Karate not in the Olympics? :( Yoshukai have you ever tried kyokushin or other full contact karates? Paul Herbert I believe (Don't quote me) that Karate is being trialed at the 2008 Olympics and officially being recognised at the 2012 games. This will be the WKF rules system which is very light and continuous, ie spectator friendly. kempocos In the USA the TKD sparring I have seen in competitions is very light point sparring. I never heard that TKD is more brutal than say kyokushin or GOJU RYU in ompetition at least in the tornamnets I have looked into. Tosh Originally posted by Paul Herbert

Throughout the World Karate is thought of as an Olympic sport, however it is not one. Karate fulfils all the sport specifications required for sports to become Olympic. The International Olympic Committee acknowledges Karate is a first level sport and the federations integrated in the WKF (World Karate Federation) as a major axis in the sport, but it has not yet made the decision to include Karate in the Olympic programme. From the WKF we want to prove to the IOC that the introduction of Karate in the Olympic Games would contribute to encourage the Olympic Spirit throughout the World. We want to be Olympic so lots of people can benefit from all the things that the people who already practice the sport already have. We owe it to society, we owe it to the sport, we owe it to Karate.

Extractions: Dancesport in the Olympics? Officially referred to as Dancesport many groups are trying to get ballroom dancing included in the Olympics. Before we can even consider the issue of ballroom dancing as an Olympic sport, we must first address the issue of whether it can be considered a sport in any terms. The Olympic Commission defines a "sport" as "any activity that combines a physical effort with a certain amount of skill." Clearly dancing requires effort. A study by the University of Freiburg in Germany which was published in the November 3, 1997 issues of Forbes Magazine, showed that "a vigorous rumba burns up the same number of calories and requires the same exertion as a bicycle competition or a footrace over a similar period of time." bodyOffer(28907) Ballroom dancing (or "Dancesport" which it is now officially called) is an extremely physical activity and at an advanced level dancers need to be very fit. They may not have the bulky look of a football player or the bulging biceps of a wrestler, but there is more to fitness than over-inflated muscles. Dancers are known for their aerobic fitness. As their level of competition increases so does their speed, balance and strength. In addition, Ballroom Dancing utilizes a variety of different muscles including, rear deltoids, rhombus, glutes and calves. Great strength is needed in the upper body to maintain the tension between partners. Also, many dancers cross train with a variety of sports to keep themselves in peak physical condition.
Nishiyama's Calling Goes Beyond Olympic Dreams karate eventually would be good enough to convince the International olympic Committethat just as judo and taekwando because olympic sports, so should karate. http://www.doshinmartialarts.com/pucin1.htm
Extractions: photo courtesy of BUGEISHA Magazine Nishiyama's Calling Goes Beyond Olympic Dreams By Diane Pucin Hidetaka Nishiyama took his first karate class when he was a 17-year-old college student in Tokyo. The son of a lawyer and a member of a family that had lived in Japan's signature city for 300 years, Nishiyama expected to have a life filled with academic pursuits and business successes. He is 72 now and Nishiyama entertains visitors on a Friday afternoon not in some monstrous Tokyo office tower but in a small storefront Dojo on Olympic Boulevard. A Dojo is a place to learn karate. Nishiyama is described as "one of the great souls of our city," by one of his pupils, Michael Elias. This Dojo, in a neighborhood cluttered with abandoned stores and decorated by graffiti, is a spartan space. There are no trophies on display or gaudy tributes to Sensei Nishiyama, which is the respectful way his students refer to their teacher. On the white wall are two crossed flags, of the United States and Japan, and a drawing of Gichin Funakoshi, who was Nishiyama's Sensei years ago. In the back, Nishiyama's has a tiny office filled with books and unpacked boxes. The boxes have been here for seven years but interior decorating is not of great importance to him.

Extractions: SYDNEY, Australia (CNNSI.com) Taekwondo officials went to great lengths to make sure Korea didn't dominant the sport during its Olympic debut. The World Taekwondo Federation did not, however, totally eliminate controversy. To make sure the nation that created taekwondo the "way of the hand and foot" didn't completely dominate the medals, each country except host Australia was limited to four athletes in the games, where eight golds were contested. As a result, the breadth of the competition was better than most would have thought. Nearly 50 nations, from Austria to Venezuela, entered. Taekwondo has even provided Vietnam with its first ever Olympic medal a silver for Tran Hieu Ngan in the women's 57-kilogram class. Even some traditional rivals were impressed.
