Extractions: Customer Reviews Since most of what I have to say has already been said, but better than I could, I will keep this brief. If you practice OMA or the JMA derivitives, get this book. The presentation of the sets and their application is awesome. I practice Isshinryu karate, so of course my sets differ in appearance from these, but it's obvious that the root is the same, and so is the potential for application. Before this book, I was ready to consign my Sanchin practice (sans Ibuki breathing) to a mere upkeep level. But, since I read this text, it is going to be on the front burner of study, along with Naifanchi and Sunsu. With the exception of the obligatory "crotty history" and certain apparently style-specific techniques on pages 1-79, this book is awesome. Now, read the other reviews, then buy this book. This book is excellent. It starts off giving the history and origin of Karate which is very interesting. Then it goes right to the point learning. If you want a book that teaches you to relax and also teaches you some self-defence this book is for you. If you learn by reading instructions for the applications of moves it includes that along with detailed pictures. This book is a must have for all martial artists.

Extractions: I highly reccomend this book to anyone interested in the philosophies of ancient China. This book has all the greats such as Kung Fu (Confucious) himself and Lao Tzu. It provides interesting insight into the history and tradition of various temples and it explains many forms of the art of Kung Fu. An entire half of it is devoted to quotes from the masters. Buy it, and read it several times. As an Okinawan Karate practitioner with over 20 years experience, (most of it in Isshinryu) I find this work very detailed in its history of the system. The author gives credit to many of the early Isshinryu pioneers that have not been made mention of in previous works like Don Bohan, and others who did much to futher Isshinryu but have recieved little or no written credit. The author also delves into other aspects which have previously not been covered like the hard/soft aspects of this syst...

Extractions: Judo Dojo On this page: A brief history of Judo Mid Sussex Martial Arts School International Judo The founder of Judo, Jigoro Kano was born in 1860. He graduated with a Degree in literature from Tokyo Imperial University in 1881 and took a Philosophy Degree the following year. Apart from being the founder of Judo, Kano was also a leading educationalist and a prominent figure in the Japanese Olympic movement. When Kano began his study of Jiujutsu as a young man, the Jiujutsu Masters of the Martial Arts were struggling to earn a living. Although they were willing to teach the skills handed down to them over many generations, there was little interest among people of the succeeding generation. Additionally the demise of the Samurai (warrior) class had reduced the need for instruction. At the age of 18 Kano studied the Jiujutsu of the Tenshin Shinyo Ryu under Fukudo and Iso, both instructors at the prestigious Komu Sho. Following the death of Fukuda, Kano remained briefly with Master Iso before finishing his pupillage with Master Ilkubo. Ju - an adjective meaning soft, gentle. This word is taken from Taoist philosophy and embodies the opposite of hard, extreme or unreasonable. Hence the use of Ju in Judo does not imply soft (as a synonym of easy), but rather reasonable, efficient. Physical action in Judo is not meant to be easy (weak) so much as economic, by using the body to its best advantage and taking active advantage of any and all weaknesses the opponent may offer, so that maximum effect can be attained with maximum efficiency. Judo has also been described as a form of wrestling in which clothes are worn by the contestants. The clothes and belt (encircling the waist twice) allow for greater range of technique.

Extractions: Fred Altensee, Dai Sempai It is very difficult to discern the origin of karate-like forms of combat as much information was passed down through oral tradition and most of the knowledge of ancient fighting methods is based upon legend rather than first hand, documented accounts. Many sources point to the existence of barehanded combat methods in both China and India at least as early as 1000 BC. Some scholars suggest an early, strong influence on the independently developing Chinese systems from India. Interestingly, there is recent archeological evidence to suggest systematized combat reaches back much further than previously thought. Statues and plaques dating back to at least 3000 BC from the Babylonian era (Mesopotamia) depict figures engaged in combat using what are commonly considered karate-type blocks, other plaques depict combatants grappling using sumo-type techniques. Some current authorities feel that the Fertile Crescent (Mesopotamia) was the starting point for what are considered Eastern combat methods, spreading to China and India through trade routes. Two Indian systems, Nata and Vajramushti, were taught to members of the warrior castethe Ksatrija. As the Indian warriors were Buddhist, this may explain the appearance of the Nio Bodhi-sattvas statues at many temples in karate-like postures. ( The Nio dieties are the guardians of the Buddhist faith.) The first generally acknowledged figure in the development of hand to hand fighting in China was the legendary Bodhidharma (Da Mo), although certainly some distinct methods and systems were already in place by the time of his arrival. Da Mo was an Indian warrior monk and the 28th patriarch of Zen Buddhism.

It is not really correct to say that one evolved from the other though. It was a very political time (as Korea has always been) and Choi moved the ITF HQ to Canada in 1972. I guess he saw the winds changing, he had fallen from (political) favour and decided to get out. Today one finds that Choi's contribution to the establishment of TKD has been written out of the WTF history books. Both CHOI and PARK Chung Hee were Generals under President Syngman RHEE and therefore potential competitors for power. Park became President of South Korea in1962 after a coup in May, 1961. Choi left Korea in 1962 to become Ambassador to Malaysia. (He got out with honour whilst his competitor became president). Park forced many changes to the structure of the various Kwans trying to unify them under one organisation. Further details are given below in an extract from "A History of TKD" which is stored in the_dojang archives. Syngman Rhee was replaced by constitutional liberalism in the Second Republic but instability in the new democracy led to a military coup on the 16th May 1961. General PARK Chung Hee dominated the military junta and terminated military rule at the end of 1962 to become the president of the Third Republic, being re-elected in 1967 and 71 until he dissolved the National Assembly and suspended the constitution in 1972 in the face of growing popular unrest. Park expanded the powers of the presidency and at the end of 1972 was directly elected president of the Fourth Republic. Despite great unrest in the Korean population he was re-elected in December 1978 but less than a year later he was assassinated by the head of his own Central Intelligence Agency.

Unprecendented growth within the Southland, especially in in the Los Angeles basin, created a need for many more community activities. Among the many traditions born during this period were the Junior Olympics, initially sponsored by the Japanese Athletic Union. Little did our forefathers realize that their thirst for healthy competition and friendship through these track and field events some seventy years ago would foster a legacy for many generations? These "Olympics" initiated the formation of numerous small track clubs to organize area participants - some with corporate or company names. Because the games would draw so many Issei and Nisei from various areas, great friendships and rivalries were created. The "Olympics" coul donly be interrupted by one of the greatest conflicts in the history of man, World War II. The Junior Olympics were resurrected in 1948; however, due to the six year layoff and the dominant culture's attitude toward "things that were Japanese", the next few years' games were anemic at best. Then, in 1952 after battling with the United States Olympic Committee regarding name usage, the Japanese-American Citizen's League took up the torch of revitalizing what would be known as the "Relays".

Like jujutsu, judo is a method of turning an opponent's force to one's own advantage through grappling and throwing skills. Instead of directly opposing the opponentâs strength, the goal is to yield to him or her, which will unbalance the opponent. This makes it easier to complete a throw.

Extractions: History and Overview of the Martial Arts by Robert W. Young The first fighting systems on earth probably evolved alongside human beings because mankind must have always had a need to defend himself against animals, not to mention against his fellow creature. Ancient murals and sculptures show fighting poses from Egypt, India and Babylon dating from as far back as 5,000 years ago. In some variations of aikido, strikes are used to set up an opponent for a throw or joint lock In others, practice consists of strictly joint locks and throws. The art is popular in Japan because police frequently learn it so they can subdue suspects without injuring them. Aikido practitioners may also train with the staff, knife and wooden sword. Contrary to the way it is portrayed in the popular movies of film star Steven Seagal, aikido has a reputation as a "nonviolent" martial art. Bando
