Extractions: T he story of the martial arts begins early in the 6th century with the visit of the Indian Prince Bodhidharma to the Shaolin Temple in northern China. Bodhidharma wanted to help the Shaolin monks find enlightenment. His message was that God came from within and not from outside. He suggested that the monks mediate in a sedentary position for many hours to find inner enlightenment. At first, the monks rejected the foreigner but Bodhidharma was determined. He went alone to a mountain cave where he remained for nine years meditating with a fervor so intent that his penetrating gaze burned two holes through the walls of the cave. Impressed with his will power and persistence, the monks accept Bodhidharma as their teacher and so began the practice of Zen Buddhism in China. However, there was one negative side effect to the long hours of meditation. Although the monks were becoming spiritually strong, they were becoming physically weak. To keep the monks healthy, Bodhidharma began to teach them a system, Chi Kung , which is based on Indian yoga.

The land around the current Japanese islands was formed about 70 million years ago. According to archaeologists, humans lived on the land as early as 2.5 million years ago. During the last ice age (50,000 to 10,000 years ago), a massive movement of the earth separated the land from the Eurasian Continent, and the Japanese islands were formed. This geographical isolation from the continent provided the Japanese with protection and the opportunity to develop their own unique culture. From 10,000 B.C through 300 B.C., the prehistoric peoples of Japan followed a hunting and gathering way of life. Collective farming began around 300 B.C., triggering the development of irrigation systems and iron-edged tools which increased harvests, in turn stimulating a massive population explosion. As social hierarchies and political structures developed, competition and warfare between villages intensified. Bronze and iron weapons were initially obtained from the continent, but soon the Japanese were making their own weapons such as swords, pikes, and spears. However, many of these early Japanese-made weapons were not practical; they were used for religious ceremonies and rituals, indicating a relatively peaceful island nation during its early years.

What followed was a time of peace and the HwaRang turned from a military organization to a group specialized in poetry and music.
