Extractions: Application Deadlines The content for the Family Nurse Practitioner curriculum focuses on the knowledge and skills required to educate nurses to provide primary health care to clients and families across the lifespan. The Primary Care core courses include primary care didactic (theory) courses, practice-focused clinical courses, and an intensive preceptorship experience. The curriculum builds upon knowledge and competencies of baccalaureate education and integrates into the Primary Care core courses knowledge and competencies gleaned in graduate core courses required for all advanced practice nurses. The MS degree with a specialization as a Family Nurse Practitioner curriculum has three major components: the Common Core segment, the Advanced Practice Core segment, and the Primary Care Specialty Core segment. Full time and part-time study are available. For part-time study, students must complete the Common Core courses (Theory 1, Theory 11, Health Care Professionalism, and Health Care Research) and some of the Advanced Practice and Specialty Core courses (Health Promotion, Advanced Pathophysiology, and Applied Drug Therapy) before enrolling in Advanced Health Assessment. Advanced Health Assessment is the gateway course into the Family Nurse Practitioner specialty courses. Once a student begins the assessment course, it is necessary to proceed directly through the Primary Care courses and Research Project to graduation. This ensures that the national certifying exam will be taken as close to the clinical courses as possible.

Extractions: 13-Mar-04 Kansas City, MO The anticipation of welcoming a new baby to the family is one of life's most joyful experiences. However, when a baby is born sick or very small, the birth experience can be a challenging one for the family. Babies who are admitted to a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) receive highly specialized medical care to increase their chances of surviving and becoming healthy, active children. For parents, the sight of their baby attached to various machines by tubes and wires can leave them feeling overwhelmed and powerless to help. The March of Dimes Greater Kansas Chapter and Saint Luke's Hospital are partners in an exciting new program to support families of babies who are admitted to the NICU. The March of Dimes NICU Family Support Program is designed to complement Saint Luke's commitment to the philosophy of family-centered care. The program will respond to the unique emotional and informational needs of the families of nearly 400 babies each year who spend their first days, weeks, or even months, in the NICU at Saint Luke's. This special program addresses issues that arise during the family's NICU stay, their transition to home, or in the sad event of their baby's death.

Extractions: community-wide effort focused on improving the quality of early childhood care and education helped to create the Kansas City area Accreditation Project. This project is designed to improve the quality of child care programs in the Kansas City area by increasing the number of early childhood centers accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAFCC) and family child care providers accredited by the National Association for Family Child Care. This program is managed by Heart of America Family Services. When the Accreditation Project began in 1997, only 15 of 500 Kansas City metropolitan area early education programs were nationally accredited. Since that time the Accreditation Project has succeeded in rallying community support for improving the quality of all community early education programs and is well on its way to achieving these goals: 100 NAEYC nationally accredited early education centers by the end of 2002
Extractions: School Readiness We invest in efforts to improve the quality of early education programs through professional development of early education teachers and improving overall quality of center- and home-based programs through national accreditation efforts. We are working to increase the accountability of early education programs through research in order to track school readiness indicators among children entering kindergarten We are pursuing strategies to build the public will and to advocate for the financing and sustainability of quality programs. The Collaborative's purpose is to design and implement strategic public education strategies aimed at creating the public will in each of the target states to expand both the supply and the quality of early care and education resources. Further, the Collaborative will share "lessons learned" on this unique partnership with the broader child care community. The Fern Webster Professional Development Fund has four components: individual scholarships for early education teachers pursuing a degree; a Higher Education Consortium designed to ease the transfer of college credits among higher education institutions; a Center Director's Institute to provide professional development for directors of child care centers; and funds to advocate for greater support of early education programs.
