Extractions: KANO The founder of Judo Jigoro Kano was born in 1860, he graduated with a degree in literature from Tokyo Imperial University in 1881 and took a further degree in philosophy the following year. Apart from being the founder of judo, Kano was a leading educationalist and a prominent figure in the Japanese Olympic movement. When Kano began his study of ju-jutsu as a young man, the ju-jutsu masters of the martial arts were struggling to earn a living. Although they were willing to teach the skills handed down to them over many generations, there was little interest among people of the succeeding generation, additionally
A Brief History Of Judo back over a thousand years into Japanese history. Japanese member of the InternationalOlympic Committee and internationally known for the development of judo. http://www.recgov.org/r&w/nihjudo/history.html
Extractions: A BRIEF HISTORY OF JUDO Modern judo has its origins in jujitsu, a fighting art that can be traced back over a thousand years into Japanese history. Judo itself, however, is a relatively recent synthesis and owes it existence to the genius of one man: Dr. Jigoro Kano. Jigoro Kano was born in the seaside town of Mikage in 1860. He and his family moved to Tokyo in 1871. Mr. Kano studied politics and literature at Tokyo Imperial University. He became an instructor of the Gakushuin in 1882 and eleven years later, he was appointed the Headmaster of the Koto Shihan, a teachers' training school. In 1909, Professor Kano became the first Japanese member of the International Olympic Committee and two years later, he founded the Japanese Athletic Association and became its first president. Because of his many contributions in the field of athletics, Professor Kano is called the "Father of Physical Education and Sport" in Japan. Professor Kano is internationally known for the development of judo. Until he was 18 years of age, Jigoro Kano was physically weak. He resolved to improve himself by studying at two jujitsu schools. He soon realized that each school had its strengths and weaknesses. Because there was unnecessary roughness and crudeness in the jujitsu techniques, and because it was difficult to practice without injury he began to reconstruct jujitsu. As he states in his own words: "...so by taking together all the good points I had learned from the various schools and adding thereto my own devices and inventions, I founded a new system for physical culture and mental training." Kano called his new system Kodokan Judo to differentiate it from the jujitsu forms. "Judo" means "the gentle way" and "kodokan" generally means "a school for studying the way", "the way" being the concept of life itself.

History history IN MALAYSIA. in the Olympics and its efforts paid off, when the InternationalOlympic Council finally News that judo was to make its debut in the Tokyo http://www.judo.com.my/Judo/history.htm
Extractions: HISTORY IN MALAYSIA News that Judo was to make its debut in the Tokyo Olympics in 1964, sent shockwaves throughout the Judo world, with vibrations reaching the odd corner that was Malaysia. Judo Clubs whose main object originally was merely to provide Judo instructions to their close knit communities, had not envisaged that they had to play a bigger part to keep up with the times. It was imperative for them to close ranks, and for Malaysia to send a team to the Tokyo Olympics, a national controlling body had to be formed. On 13th August 1961, the Selangor Judo Club and the 22nd Commonwealth Brigade Judo Club got together, to form the Malaysia Judo Federation (MJF), with Dr. N.S. Chin as President, Mr. Khor Ghoon Hoe as Secretary and Mr. Wong Sik Poi as Treasurer. The three founders, for many years, worked perfectly as a team to spearhead the Judo movement. Finally, it is with great sadness to announce that Mr. Capt. (rtd) Khor Ghoon Hoe, one of the true founders and motivator of Judo, has recently passed away on October 21st 1999. A true son of Judo, if anyone can be known as the Father of Judo in Malaysia, Capt. (rtd) Khor certainly wears that mantle, having promoted Judo throughout his lifetime, and achieved Malaysia's highest seniority of being 8th Dan at the time of his passing.

Extractions: Judo Hisory Page The History of Judo There are more than 1,000 different forms of martial arts scattered around the world and dating back more than 2,000 years ago. When the martial arts started and where no one really knows. In our western culture we can date the development of martial arts such as archery and wrestling to ancient Greece. However there is evidence that martial art training dates to Babylonian times. In the far east development of the Oriental martial arts is a bit more obscure. It is generally accepted that the martial arts developed its roots in ancient China among the monks who used weaponless fighting techniques to protect themselves. It is not known which type of unarmed techniques were used first, but it is clear that specialization was the custom. Combinations of different forms of fighting were unknown. Despite the ruling classes wanting to keep unarmed combat techniques secret, through commerce and migration, the martial arts spread from China throughout the east. The earliest chronicle concerning the martial arts is the Nihon Shoki which discusses Japanese wrestling and dates back to 720 AD. Since then, the martial arts have developed into a variety of systems that were the precursors of today's modern martial arts. Despite the development of many types of weaponry, unarmed combat remains a skill practiced all over the world. JUDO'S HISTORY

Two of Hawaiis and the nations oldest Judo clubs, Shobukan and Shunyokan, were established by young immigrants in this early ear of Japanese immigration. The Shunyokan Judo Club was founded by Shigemi Teshima and Naomatsu Kaneshige. In 1913, while on a goodwill tour of the United States, Professor Jigoro Kano visited the school and because of a close relationship with Mr. Teshima, he was asked to give the club an appropriate name. In the office of the counsel General in Honolulu, Professor Kano personally inscribed the name Shunyo Kan in Japanese for the Club. This sign still is hung in the Shunyokan Dojo. Professor Isami Shishido, Seventh Degree Black Belt and Past Chairman of the Clubs Board of Directors, joined the Club in 1919.
