Extractions: Familysearch ... JEWISH RECORDS Jewish records [ Jüdische Urkunden ] include records of Jews or Jewish congregations. The Family History Library has over 2,000 microfilms of German Jewish vital records that list births, marriages, and deaths. These vital records are an excellent source for accurate information about Jewish ancestors. The Family History Library also has other types of Jewish records, including synagogue records, records of Jewish taxpayers, Holocaust victims, and censuses. General Historical Background The earliest German Jewish records are synagogue records, but these were not kept by all congregations. The German Jews did not usually keep registers of births, marriages, and deaths unless required to do so by law. In the early nineteenth century, Jews in many parts of Germany were required by law either to register with Catholic or Lutheran parishes or to prepare their own civil transcripts of births, marriages, and deaths. These types of records, whether kept by a Christian parish or civil authorities, are called Jewish records.

Extractions: Presentation by Esther Csaky At our last meeting in March about 30 people gathered at the Makor Library for a fascinating presentation by Esther Csaky, a founding member of the Victorian Branch of the Australian Jewish Genealogical Society. Esther has presented to us before on the subject of genealogy and it was wonderful to have her back again on this subject which interests so many of us. Esther has been researching her own family for many years and has made some exciting discoveries about her family. Through her expert knowledge of web searching techniques and various sites, she continues to discover members of her family. Esther ran the evening in a very practical way. The first part of her presentation showed us how to get organized and get started. Esther outlined suggestions for initial research before setting out on web searching. The second part of the evening covered searching on the web at some of the many sites available for family tree research. Esther listed some valuable resources both on the web and books held at the Makor Library, which are listed at the end of this review.

The award was presented to Stanley Diamond, president of the JGS of Montreal, on July 24th in Washington, D.C., during the 23rd IAJGS International Conference on Jewish Genealogy. The award was given to the JGS of Montreal recognizing their exceptional efforts in indexing Jewish vital records from Montreal and Quebec. Daniel Schlyter presenting award to Stanley Diamond, Ruth Diamond and Alan Greenberg In 1943, the Drouin Genealogical Institute microfilmed all available vital record registers of Quebec including the Jewish registers of Montreal, Quebec City and Sherbrooke, and Civil Records of Montreal, Lachine, Outremont and Westmount in which there are entries identified as Jewish. Quebec is the only jurisdiction in North America where the vital records were kept on a confessional or religious basis thus making the indexing of solely Jewish records possible.
