Extractions: Language Programs Abroad Books, audiocassettes and classroom drills can all help you acquire the fundamentals of another language. But if you want to speak a language fluently, fully comprehend it in written form and be coherent when using it to write, nothing compares to being immersed in the culture where the language is used regularly and surrounded by people who speak, read and write it daily. Should you spend time in another country where the native tongue is foreign to your ears, you will likely pick up a few colloquialisms and develop a rudimentary lingua franca. Yet without formal training in the language, practising phrases and words won't likely lead to fluency in it. Several educational institutions and organizations around the world have designed linguistic curricula that combine the ideas of cultural immersion by living abroad with the classroom-style academic model of immersion.
