TOKYO, Japan Tokyo sent off its first army team to Iraq in the largest and most dangerous overseas military assignment since World War II. The move Friday follows intense debate on the matter, stirred up by the killing of two Japanese diplomats in Iraq late last year. Dressed in green camouflage fatigues, the 30-member contingent and their backup team stood in formation while listening to words of encouragement from the defense minister and senior officers. "Yours is a very noble mission," Defense Minister Shigeru Ishiba told the assembled soldiers. "There are people in Iraq hoping you will lend them a helping hand."

Extractions: From the Introduction Japanese people often ask foreigners why they came to Japan. It is not always an easy question to answer. There are many, often complicated, reasons that bring foreigners to Japan. The Many Roads to Japan tells the story of the adventures of one foreigner who had to follow many twists and turns in his life journey before finding his niche in Japan. College-aged students will find they have much in common with John Banks, the main character of this story. As with today's youth, who find themselves in a world that no longer offers them any guarantees and yet demands from them crucial decisions to be made at an early age, so it was with John Banks and his generation, who in their teenage years were also faced with making important decisions in a turbulent, changing world. The decisions made between the ages of 18 and 22 can have a strong effect on the rest of one's life and even catapult one in unimagined directions, both emotional and physical. The key event in John's life was his decision to refuse to fight in the Vietnam War. This decision launched him on a search that ultimately led him around the world and finally to Japan.

TOKYO, Japan (Reuters) Japan has tightened security at 650 vital facilities across the country, including nuclear power plants, government offices and U.S. facilities, to guard against a possible terrorist attack, a National Police Agency official said. The official said the heightened alert Friday was due to such factors as Japan's recent dispatch of a contingent of ground forces to help rebuild Iraq. He declined to say whether there had been any new information concerning a possible attack. There were two late-night explosions near the Defense Ministry in Tokyo this week, which police said could have been carried out in a protest at the dispatch of Japanese troops to Iraq.

Extractions: "Too depressed to be punks, too happy to be goths, and just too talented to be new wavers. Ah, where to fit in Japan. Sylvian 's talent for ambience is mainly what gets them included. Album-wise, you can jump in anywhere pretty much, they start perky and get more sedate as time goes on." www.vamp.org/Gothic/Text/gothlist.html "Substantially weaker than their subsequent releases, the first two albums of Japan introduced a group of neo-punks, clearly influenced by glam-rock icons of their time like David Bowie and Roxy Music. But with the distintive funky bass touch of Mick Karn and Sylvian 's unique colorful voice, Japan were more than just another neo-romantic line-up hiding behind a mask of make-up. They were different, they were stylish!"
