This work, along with the Nihongi written a few decades later, is the earliest account of both Japanese history and Japanese mythology. While both works borrow heavily from Chinese historiographical styles and in part from Chinese mythology and religion, from the Tokugawa period onwards both Japanese and Europeans have regarded these two works as the best source of indigenous Japanese literature. World Cultures Glossary History historiography , or "the writing of history." Early Japanese historiography is dominated by mythical tales and unverifiable events. The writers of early Japanese history are not concerned with verification in the same way the modern historians are; they are, rather, concerned with setting out the special character of Japanese culture in the Yamato and Nara periods. This special character is laid down in the mythological foundations of Japan and the Japanese people; both the Kojiki and the Nihongi compose narratives that make the Japanese a special people in creation with a special kinship to the creating goddess. The history of the Japanese becomes in these narratives the central events in human history and, like the historical writing in so many other cultures, including our own, the narratives create a myth that various developments in Japan are origins of practices throughout the human world.

Their rulers saw themselves as universal monarchs, thereby matching the pretentions of the Roman Emperors in the West. The only drawbacks to their historical priority were that India suffered a setback, when the Indus Valley Civilization collapsed (for disputed reasons), and China got started later than the Middle Eastern civilizations. By the time India recovered, it was a contemporary of Greece, rather than Sumeria, with many parallel cultural developments, like philosophy. And, curiously, China reached a philosophical stage of development in the same era, the "axial age," 800 to 400 BC. Later, when the West, India, and China, all had contact with each other, it was at first India that had the most influence on China, through the introduction of Buddhism. Extractions: I am a Japanese Christian writer living in Japan. As I study the Bible, I began to realize that many traditional customs and ceremonies in Japan are very similar to the ones of ancient Israel. I considered that perhaps these rituals came from the religion and customs of the Jews and the Ten Lost Tribes of Israel who might have come to ancient Japan. The ancient kingdom of Israel, which consisted of 12 tribes, was in 933 B.C.E. divided into the southern kingdom of Judah and the northern kingdom of Israel. The 10 tribes out of 12 belonged to the northern kingdom and the rest to the southern kingdom. The descendants from the southern kingdom are called Jews. The people of the northern kingdom were exiled to Assyria in 722 B.C.E. and did not come back to Israel. They are called "the Ten Lost Tribes of Israel." They were scattered to the four corners of the earth. We find the descendants of the Israelites not only in the western world, but also in the eastern world especially along the Silk Road. The following peoples are thought by Jewish scholars to be the descendants of the Ten Lost Tribes of Israel.

Japan was subject to strong Chinese and Korean influence thereafter, but was unable to develop a strong centralised State based on the Chinese model. Political and economic power was in the hands of a group of noble dynasties which operated on a largely feudal basis. The 12th century AD saw the emergence of the shogun , a military governor drawn from one of the great families, who ruled with the consent of the others, although most of their energies were devoted to internecine warfare. Only an external threat, such as the attempted Mongol invasions in the late 13th century, would unite the various families against the common enemy. This helped create a latent national consciousness which slowly developed over the next 300 years. The actual unification of Japan began during the Tokugawa period (1600-1868), during which a national administrative hierarchy was forged from the family structures of the ruling class.
