Both China and South Korea say the text books distort the reality of Japan's involvement in their countries during the 20th Century. South Korean spokesman Park Joong-young quoted the president as saying: "It would not be of help to either South Korea or Japan for Japan to teach its people distorted history. "The government will keep demanding that Japan corrects the problematic books because that is the only way the two countries can forget about the past and forge a forward-looking, co-operative relationship." Bitter The row is a personal setback for the president, who pledged to improve ties with rival Japan soon after taking office in 1998. Many Koreans still harbour bitter feelings towards Japan, which occupied the country for 35 years.

Extractions: An introduction by Gary D. Allinson; Karel van Wolferen: The Enigma of Japanese Power Gary D. Allinson, professor of East Asian Studies at the University of Virginia, has written a useful Guide To Modern Japanese History . He considers himselfs a moderate observer who gets "dismayed by 'Japan bashers'", but Allinson also wants to distinguish himself from "'chrysanthemums', Japan lovers who sometimes overlook its shortcomings." His historical narrative is divided into four chapters of about equal length. Chapter One, "Preserving Autonomy, 1850-1889", treats the aristocratic and monarchical state that was almost entirely closed off from the outside world. Foreingers were kept away from Japanese soil, with the exception of a score of Dutch and a few thousand Chinese merchants in a special district in the city of Nagasaki. A foreign crisis occuring amid domestic turbulence finally led to a revolution in 1868, known as Meiji restoration. Allinson examines the political, military, economic, social and cultural changes occuring during this period, largely imposed by an oligarchy unchecked by representative political institutions and operating largely free from the constraints of public opinion.

After ascending the throne and ruling over Kyushu, Emperor Jimmu expanded his empire northward to Yamato. During this time, Korea's influence on Japan's culture was considerable. Korea had made great strides in their culture, significantly influenced by China, and these influences were passed on to Japan. By the 5th century with the help of the Paekche kingdom in Korea, Chinese writings were beginning to be used in court and around 430, historiographers were appointed in an effort to keep accurate records. Buddhism, along with its priests, images, scriptures, etc., was brought to Japan during this time from Korea as well, which made a noteworthy impact on Japan. Although the relationship between Korea and Japan was weakening, Buddhism was firmly entrenched in Japan's culture, with it becoming the national religion by the 7th century. More...

This is why even communities which are no longer actively involved in whaling do have whaling traditions which are an integral part of their community cultures. These whaling traditions go back to beginnings in prehistoric times with the use of stranded whales. Next, based on finds of hand harpoons and porpoise skulls in burial mounds, it would appear that active hunting of small cetaceans probably dates from the Jomon Period (10,000-300 BC). Scholars consider that active whaling began in the sixteenth century, but it was only toward the end of that century that whaling developed into a large-scale endeavor. Then, toward the end of the seventeenth century, Japanese began to use nets. In 1675 in Taiji, large groups of people organized to drive whales into big nets in the open sea, then used harpoons to attack the entangled whales. From that, over time, Japan's twentieth century whaling evolved. In this centuries-long evolutionary process, and using various harvesting techniques, whaling traditions spread from southern Japan to the northern coast of Hokkaido, and became not only coastal but also North Pacific and Antarctic pelagic whaling. In the course of this expansion, whaling came to be defined in three categories: large-type coastal whaling (LTCW); pelagic whaling; and small-type coastal whaling (STCW).

This book has a number of references which condone Japan's history of invasion and colonial rule, and glorify the rule of the Emperor. The approval of such a textbook will certainly lead to the concealment, distortion and glorification of the history of invasions and atrocities committed by the Japanese Imperial Military. We are deeply worried such a situation might happen in the future. We sincerely hope that Japan will start this new century filled with new hope by constructing strong solidarity with all the peoples of Asia, regardless of nationality or race. For this, it is incumbent upon we Japanese to strive in all humility for honesty in historical interpretation in words and deeds, and thus win the trust of our fellow Asians. Based on this attitude, Japan has to review its past, reflect on it, determine not to repeat the same faults, and cooperate with other Asian countries. We will never attain all these unless we make serious efforts to make our own the viewpoint of the Asian countries which were victimized by the Japanese Military in the past.

Shirou Aibara of the Japanese Navy. A boy flew onboard their biplane with a box-type tail. The plane was 6.8 meters long and 7.2 meters wide and had 4-wheel landing gear. It flew 15 meters at a height of four meters on 5 December 1909 after a ground run by the power of several people. Five days later, Le Prieur took off with a ground run pulled by an automobile and flew about 100 meters. The first flight of a Japanese-made powered airplane was made on 5 May 1911. The plane was designed and built by Sanji Nagahara, a Japanese Navy engineer and was 10 meters long, 9.2 meters wide, and equipped with a 50-horsepower Gnome engine. It flew approximately 60 meters on 5 May 1911. Because its flying quality was so stable, it flew to many cities throughout Japan for demonstrations. Provided to the AIAA for the sole purpose of its Evolution of Flight Campaign.
