Extractions: appear in history until 57 AD when it is first mentioned in Chinese histories, where it is referred to as "Wa." The Chinese historians tell us of a land divided into a hundred or so separate tribal communities without writing or political cohesion. The Japanese do not start writing their histories until around 600 AD; this historical writing culminates in 700 AD in the massive chronicles, The Record of Ancient Matters and the Chronicles of Japan. These chronicles tell a much different and much more legendary history of Japan, deriving the people of Japan from the gods themselves. B.C. to the present day. For this reason, the original inhabitants managed to hold on to stone-age life long after the regions to the west had urbanized. This island status has also protected Japan from foreign invasions. Only twice in Japanese history has the island been successfully overrun by foreigners: in the third century BC by the wave of immigrations from the Korean peninsula, and in 1945 by the United States.

Riukiu Myura (or Akira Miura ) was a lifelong martial arts enthusiast. He worked as a policeman and some time in the 50's become an unarmed combat instructor to the police. He also taught judo seminars in Australia. It is believed that at some point he was a student of So Doshin the founder of Nippon Shorinji Kempo . Murray. In Murray 1952 :35-36 he concludes his brief discussion of games in ancient China thus: "The oldest and best of the native Chinese games, wei-k'i, is older than AD 1000." This is prefaced by other outrageous remarks: "... Chinese historians have always tended to exaggerate the age of their inventions and in particular the age of their games. Modern scholarship holds that the only Chinese board-games before the Christian era were simple games of the merels type, i.e. games of alinement. The yih mentioned by Confucius (551-479 BC) and Mencius (372-289 BC) was the smaller merels." Yet only a year before, the great sinologue Bernhard Karlgren was castigating those who found it fashionable to pour scorn on the antiquity of Chinese texts: "It looks very scholarly and critical. But with few exceptions such condemnations are based on flimsy, insufficient and subjective arguments..." (Karlgren 1951:117) Moreover, what was to Murray "modern scholarship", so far as I can see, totally contradicts his assertion. Limiting ourselves, in deference to his suspicions, to non-Chinese scholars, we find Dr Ogawa Takuji, for example, in a very important article (

County Sligo in north west of Ireland, with a quiet and unheralded beauty of its own, is where 50% of my roots are - this was my father's county. The coastal drive from Sligo town into Donegal is magnificent and from the shore we can see a connection with North America. Coney Island is just off the coast at Rosses Point and it is from here that the more famous Coney Island took its name. My brother has recently re-opened our Sligo links by buying a holiday home in Rosses Point and many a good day's fun is spent sea-angling on his boat. When I started this page I thought I would have little to write about, instead it seems to have turned out to be the longest page of the whole journey. I came across a great book by Edward Laxton called "The Famine Ships - the Irish Exodus to America 1846-51" which listed the names and departure points of Irish emigrants during the famine years of 1845-1849. It caught my interest and I included the information in this page that was gleaned from it.
