The old Japanese word soramitsu was used in classical Japanese poetry as an epithet for Yamato, the old name of the Nara region. Because the Japanese word sora means sky and mi means viewing, Nihon-shoki , a history compiled in the 8th century, explained the derivation of the word soramitsu by the legend that a deity named Nigihayahi-no-Mikoto viewed Yamato from a flying ship and then landed there (see Nihongi translated by W. On the side I do computer service tech work out of my house all over Southern Indiana. I get to spend a lot of time waiting for the pager to go off or the phone to ring. Hence this blog. Main When I was about three or four we moved to Japan. Sounds like quite the exotic life but I don't remember a whole bunch about it. I don't know any Japanese that I didn't hear in a Godzilla movie. I remember spending most of the time in the on-base housing with the rest of the round eyes, but for the first few months or so we lived off-base. We hung around with round-eyes, we went to school with round eyes, we could have been in Idaho except that I could see Mount Fuji from my schoolhouse window. What I remember most about Japan is the GOAT. Dad bought a 1965 GTO convertible in California and brought it over to Japan. It was bright yellow with a white top and had a tiger on the front dash whose eyes lit up in sync with the turn signals. The tiger's tail disappeared into one defroster vent and came out of the other. Hanging from the dashboard was a silver box with eight green lights that flashed in time to the spark plugs. I think it even had a four-track tape player. Dad was quite the gear-head even back then. I was introduced to stereo equipment (but I was told never to touch it), I saw my first color TV when dad got that round-tube RCA (but most of the shows were still black and white). I think Mom drove a Corvair, I remember finding dozens of little plastic cars in between the seat cushions, a veritable treasure trove for a five year old kid!

Korean writing systems (4th century a.d.), architecture, political systems, religions, and even musical instruments came from China. Koreans adapted these Chinese things and made them their own. Chinese scholars had devised a kind of printing system using carved wooden blocks. Koreans took this invention one step further and created the first world's first metal moveable type in the 12th century. Adaptation of foreign things for their own use is a historical characteristic of Korean culture, even today.
