Post West to Meet East At Exhibition of Rare Islamic Art Friday, March 19, 2004; Page C01 Starting in July, the National Gallery of Art will display rare Islamic art from the Victoria and Albert Museum, its first major display of art from the Arab world in 17 years. The rare traveling show, which will be announced today, was possible because the London museum is building a new gallery for its Middle Eastern artifacts. The Victoria and Albert, founded in 1851, is considered the foremost museum of decorative arts in the world, and its holdings of Islamic materials go back to the 10th century. "Palace and Mosque: Islamic Art From the Victoria and Albert Museum," a collection of 120 pieces, will open July 18 and close in February before going to Fort Worth, Tokyo and Sheffield, England. The centerpieces will be a 20-foot pulpit commissioned by Sultan Qait Bay in the 15th century for a mosque in Cairo, as well as carpets from Iran and Turkey. "This is an opportunity for the gallery to showcase one of the greatest collections of Islamic art in the world. It covers a whole range from paintings to textiles to carpets, metalwork, glass, all that visual culture," said Earl A. Powell III, the National Gallery director.

These techniques include the application of lustrous glazes and rich colors in ceramics and glassware; intricate silver inlays that transform the surfaces of bronze metalwork; lavish molded stucco and carved wood wall panels; and endlessly varied motifs woven into textiles and rugs. In nearly all instances the objects decoratedwhether ewers, cooking cauldrons, candlesticks, or pen casesserved fundamentally practical purposes; their aesthetic effect was aimed above all at making the daily activities or architectural setting more pleasurable. In the Moslem world a concrete message is transmitted through its abstract forms. The Moslems tended to reject the representation of the visible in their art to emphasize that visible reality is but an illusion and that Allah alone is true. Abstraction thus became a way to make a very specific theological point.

Extractions: Islamic Art: I slamic art is often defined in art books as being an art whose boundaries are not geographical but theological. That is, this style of art called Islamic, was produced in many different geographic regions whose diverse cultures were unified through the religion of Islam. This is correct. Then these same books typically cite the Islamic ban on figural representation as a defining characteristic of the style. Next, they give some explanation as to why they believe that figural art was created in these areas, anyway. Finally, they go on to discuss the figural pieces right alongside the non-figural pieces as examples of Islamic Art. This is incorrect. The Islamic religion still forbids the representation of figures and so, naturally, to call any art which contains figural representation "Islamic", is erroneous and offensive to Moslems (believers). For this reason, on this site at least, we will make a distinction between the figural representations (see miniature painting ) and the non-figural pieces, which may be properly termed and discussed as Islamic art. A New Culture I slam began as a religious movement in early 7th century Arabia and quickly spread throughout the Middle East. Before the next century Muslems had conquered and converted Byzantium and Persia, as well as parts of Asia, Africa and Europe. For the next six centuries, until the Mongol nomads sacked the Muslem capital of Baghdad in 1258, the nation of Islam was the world's largest empire and the site of a great cultural flowering.

The development of ceremonial which expresses the position of the ruler in any time or any realm must necessarily relate to the growth of a political idea. The development of royal ceremonial under the Umayyads goes hand in hand with the formation of the theory of the caliphate, which, since Arnold's study, badly needs revision. Most studies of Islamic political theory are based on texts which are not earlier than the eleventh century, and which attempt to formulate a theory of authority according to what it should be and should have been under Islamic law. The only really accurate sources for a true understanding of the political theory of the early Islamic dynasties are recorded in incidents which reveal the underlying political philosophy which may or may not have been expressed, but for which we have no direct evidence. Later, under Hisham, the argument progressed a step further. A certain Qiyam ibn-Shaqi, the Himyarite, asked the caliph: "O Commander of the Faithful, who is more honorable (akram), your successor (khalifah) over the people or your messenger (rasul) to them? The Commander of the Faithful answered: Of course my successor over my people. Ibn-Shaqi retorted: But you are the successor of God (khalifat allah) while Muhammad is only his messenger..." Here we reach the final point of the rationalization by the Umayyads of their power. The caliphate is by its very nature, so to speak semantically, seen as superior first to the prophetic office, and then to Muhammad himself, the prophet par excellence.

Extractions: For years I have been an admirer of Rasheed Butt's calligraphies. At a time when many calligraphers strive to create new and unusual forms, he has perfected the classical style in a unsurpassable way. His naskh is masterly, and the combination of naskh and kufi, as e.g. in his superb rendering of Surat ur rehman, is unique. Lately Mr. Butt has concentrated upon composing hilya, the time honoured description of the beauty of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), using the three extant descriptions and writing them in both nashk and nastaliq in a style and shape worthy of their noble contents. A special feature of Rasheed Butt's calligraphies is the ornamentation in golden hues and colours with most subtle arabesques, reviving the most delicate designs. We hope that the Pakistani master calligrapher will live for many many years to fill the world with the beautiful designs of his miracle-working pen so that we can admire through him the quintessential Islamic art, that of calligraphy, which developed due to the wish to write the word of God as beautifully as possible. Does not the tradition state: "Verily God is beautiful and loves beauty?" It is this beauty which can be sensed through Rasheed Butt's art, the cultural background of the spectator notwithstanding.
